The Yamanote Line is a Japan Rail surface line that circles downtown Tokyo in about an hour. Observations of Japan over two decades. Friday, December 18, 2009. Christmas in Japan was always a little surreal. Decorations went up in the department stores and Christmas music played over the loudspeakers. Stores held Christmas sales. You could find stands selling live Christmas trees, and "Christmas cakes" appeared in markets in time for the holiday. There was a big, breathless run-up to the holiday, and then . . .
