Sunday, April 27, 2014. Last week I toured Shangri La, the five-acre ocean-side estate of Doris Duke, the famous tobacco heiress, who died in 1993. Although she was reputed to be a very private person who entertained few guests in her lavish home, she wanted the public to enjoy this showpiece of Islamic art and architecture when she passed on. The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art was set up to own and support the estate. Can one be truly happy with so much money and fame? I pondered the question.
