Adolescent Lit Journal

Saturday, April 23, 2011. Skim by Mariko Tamaki. I just finished reading Skim’s Journal. With words by Mariko Tamaki and drawings by Jillian Tamaki and found myself feeling elated I was no longer a teenager. The teenage years are some of the most difficult years to go through but this short novel seemed to only emphasize the negative aspects of being young. I realize that the novel was meant to be a reflection of the life of Kimberly Keiko Cameron, better known as Skim, but I found it very depressing.

Adolescent Lit Journal: January 2011

http://adolescentlitjournal.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 30, 2011. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings". As I read Maya Angelou's novel, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", I couldn't help but think about all the factors that affect a person's life growing up. Through this novel the reader follows Marguerite and her brother Bailey as they grow from innocent children and move into adulthood. Momma showed her love daily by making sure the children had food to eat. She showed a desire to raise them to productive members of society. I found this book to...

Sunday, February 13, 2011. To Kill a Mockinbird" by Harper Lee. P 285). Atticus' response reinforces that thought that prejudice comes with age: "I don't know, but they did it. They've done it before and they did it tonight and they'll do it again and when they do it - seems that only children weep" (p 285). Sunday, February 6, 2011. Kindred" by Octavia E. Butler. It also raised those questions regarding time travel in regards to Dana's actions and could they have affected the future?

Adolescent Lit Journal: March 2011

Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Parable of the Sower. I found the novel the Parable of the Sower. By Octavia E. Butler to be a very interesting and yet haunting read because of its subject matter. The futuristic view of the world that Butler portrays in the story is filled with action that keeps the reader on edge to find out what happens and who survives and how they are able to do so. What is haunting to me about the story is how believable the storyline is. Add that with other situations in the world such as...

Adolescent Lit Journal: Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman

http://adolescentlitjournal.blogspot.com/2011/04/maus-i-and-maus-ii-by-art-spiegelman.html

Saturday, April 23, 2011. Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman. I have never been a comic book fan so when I first saw the format of Maus I and II and thought about having to read a series in this format I was far from thrilled. However, I soon found that I really enjoyed reading these comic novels by Art Spiegelman. Not only were the stories engaging, but the graphics added a new dimension of meaning. Spiegelman would indicate the tone of particular parts of the story through his use of black and white.

Thursday, July 31, 2008. Lansdale, J. (2000). The Bottoms. New York: Mysterious Press, 328 pp. Edgar Award for Best Novel. Joe Lansdale's novel The Bottoms. I could see using this novel in a literature circle or as an individual read. It is rather gruesome and would most likely not be appropriate for a whole class. It could easily be used as a jumping point for other contemporary works of macabre, such as Katherine Dunn' Geek Love. Or Jill Berry's Cruddy. Heath, J. (2008). The Lab. World of corporate con...
