Untangling the Skein: It's a VBS kind of summer

Knitting a beautiful life out of everyday chaos, and loving it! Thursday, July 16, 2015. It's a VBS kind of summer. So far this year, Drake has attended three vacation Bible schools. One at our church, Calvary. One at First Baptist, and the last at Odum Baptist my home/growing up church. Let the little children come unto me, indeed! We've had the best discussions on the way home from each. Heaven, Hell, Attributes of God, Angels, clouds in Heaven and HOW will we walk on them without falling through?

Untangling the Skein: Why the long face?
http://untanglingtheskein.blogspot.com/2015/06/why-long-face.html
Knitting a beautiful life out of everyday chaos, and loving it! Friday, June 26, 2015. Why the long face? So, the Supreme Court ruled on same sex marriage, making it legal in all fifty states. And the internetz went 'splody. Seriously, you would think the world was coming to an end. Some FB posts seemed to be angling toward Christ coming back imminently (because of this). Doom and gloom, wails and moans. People, pick up your heads! June 26, 2015 at 10:10 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Hi, I'm a ...

Deep Mulching Isn't For Everyone - Bateman Homestead
http://batemanhomestead.weebly.com/home/deep-mulching-isnt-for-everyone
Deep Mulching Isn't For Everyone. Adding 100 bags of leaves to the garden bed last fall. There are a million ways to garden, and no matter who you ask, they all have different opinions. For a few years now, the big push is on "no till", or lasagna gardening. We decided to give it a try this year, and see how we did. I was very hopeful that it would keep the weeds, particularly the crabgrass, in check. After reading many websites, and watching "Back to Eden", I was excited! Despite my best efforts early o...

After the Stale Seedbed Method - Bateman Homestead
http://batemanhomestead.weebly.com/home/after-the-stale-seedbed-method
After the Stale Seedbed Method. Two weeks later, this is what the new garden bed looks like. We had 6mil black plastic on it to help kill off any weeds, after tilling. I am very impressed with how much it killed off. So what was the first thing to get planted? I will give them a week or two to get some more height on them, the we will underseed with lettuce. This will maximize our growing area, and also help to keep weeds away (God willing! Not Local to us, but still want fresh food for your family?

Expanding - Bateman Homestead
http://batemanhomestead.weebly.com/home/expanding
Our plans have always included expanding the livestock on the homestead. The plan we made over the winter was to convert the old greenhouse into a meat bird (chickens), and turkey house. Half on one side, half on the other, with a split run for them to get out into. But, the best laid plans get changed when you have an opportunity you just cannot pass up. Tillers - Bateman Homestead
http://batemanhomestead.weebly.com/home/tillers
One of the best investments any gardener or homesteader can make, in my opinion, is a tiller. There are many things to consider before making your purchase, and I plan to cover a few here, as well as what we are currently using, and what we plan to use in the future. Size is probably the single biggest choice, for me, in what I will choose for a tiller. As a person with an upper limb disability, I have to know that I can handle the machine. Adjusting Your Seed Starting. I recently went to NH for a two week trip, to visit family. Just before I left we got an inch of sleet with some freezing rain, and it collapsed my greenhouse that I worked so hard to winterize. While on vacation in the snowy tundra, I needed to devise a solution to seed starting, without them being in my house taking up space. This is what we came up with. The New Girls - Bateman Homestead
http://batemanhomestead.weebly.com/home/the-new-girls
For some reason, I never posted about the new girls I got for our homestead plans. The plan after I got the boys, was to add at least one doe to the homestead so that we could breed, and have milk. Well, sometimes things work out for the best, for them and me. Here is a sampling of last year's babies, so you can get an idea of what I get to look forward to (besides wonderful cheese and milk). Are you taking them with you? Not Local to us, but still want fresh food for your family? 5 Acres and A Dream.
