A comparison of weekly SST analyses from mid-September and from last week shows the contrast – a remarkable band of significantly cooler than normal SSTs now stretches from Sakhalin almost to the U.S. west coast. Remarkably, the negative NPM episode of late winter, related to El Niño, proved to be very short-lived, and the index is already back up to the strongly positive territory of 2013-2015.
