A Wilderness of Thought: Critique - It's Not All About You
http://awildernessofthought.blogspot.com/2009/09/critique-its-not-all-about-you.html
A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Wednesday, September 2, 2009. Critique - It's Not All About You. A good friend recently critiqued a short story I'd given her. The short story is about a young lady who has been raised by a family of criminals and is now on her own, making her way in the world the only way she knows how, by committing crimes. Then she said something that surprised me at the time but, in retrospect, is both hilarious and true. I can tell you're not a criminal.".

A Wilderness of Thought: The Confidence of Night
http://awildernessofthought.blogspot.com/2009/06/confidence-of-night.html
A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Thursday, June 18, 2009. The Confidence of Night. I love driving at night during summer. Flying along Highway 5, new-mown hay acrid and green, stinging my nose. The highway quiet and empty between towns. Sensible people asleep while I swoop along the gentle rise and fall of the road. Driving at night in the summer means adventure, something new to see. I've always had a good vacation when it started out with a night-time drive. I'm 44 and I feel lik...

A Wilderness of Thought: June 2009

A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Thursday, June 25, 2009. Dreams of Childhood Fanfic. A post by Justine Larbalestier. Reminded me of my own first attempts at writing. It was fanfiction. I had no idea it existed, at the time, didn't realize that was what I was doing. All I knew was that writing those stories made me forget the unhappiness of 6th grade. I made maps, developed a history, even made a clumsy attempt at lang con. Including an alphabet I created. I don't keep a lot of mem...

A Wilderness of Thought: September 2009
http://awildernessofthought.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Better planning would have told me this wasn't a short story, it was the opening of a novel. It had too much back story; too many plots wanted telling; too many characters inserted themselves in the first 3,000 words . Dealing with this issue reminded me of a problem I have on and off with my writing. I wasn't suffering from writer's block. I was suffering from writer's indecision. Links to this post. The more time I s...

Drinking Like a Writer. Nov 6th, 2011 at 9:25 PM. Love Song for Gladys Kravitz. Aug 22nd, 2011 at 8:32 PM. A bit of poetry for a soft summer evening. Love Song for Gladys Kravitz. Your name is Welsh and means territorial ruler. And you rule my heart with your iron voice. And your plastic glasses. You are everything I ever feared I would become. Your flowery housedress reveals. So little, but hides nothing. And your sense of yourself. Extends halfway down the block. I would let you clean my teeth. Jul 25t...

A Wilderness of Thought: Process Is Not Content
http://awildernessofthought.blogspot.com/2009/07/process-is-not-content.html
A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Thursday, July 30, 2009. Process Is Not Content. Don't look at me like that. There are some of you going "Yeah, that's how I shop! I also like it when I can perform a specific process that will give me a predictable result. Flip a switch and fill a room with light. Predictability is comforting in a world gone postal. The downside is it's boring as hell creatively and not conducive to writing. I mistook the process for the content. I once heard an au...

A Wilderness of Thought: October 2008

A Wilderness of Thought. Follow me into the wilderness. Friday, October 17, 2008. Blog Reboot 2.0. Then you're done. Because the chief commodity a writer has to sell is his courage. And if he has none, he is more than a coward. He is a sellout and a fink and a heretic, because writing is a holy chore.". Harlan Ellison, from his anthology Dangerous Visions. I don't always agree with Ellison. There are times he's quite objectionable both in public. Also, there have been reminders that not all sci fi/fantas...
