A Mother's Smile

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Monday, October 04, 2010. Edith Stein on "extraordinary women". A few weeks ago I emerged from one of my favorite places of prayer, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, with a new book under my arm: "Essays on Woman," by Edith Stein. The German Jewish philosopher-turned-Carmelite, is also known to the world as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, whose fruitful life ended in martyrdom at the gas chambers of Auschwitz. A Mother's Smile: January 2010

http://amotherssmile.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Sunday, January 31, 2010. Book Nook: St. George and the Dragon. So I caved and during “G” week we talked about St. George (a possibly mythological Catholic saint, but useful for teaching purposes nonetheless), and read this beautiful, Caldecott-medal winning picture book. That dwells in the realm of myth most certainly. Written by Margaret Hodges and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, it is a retelling of a portion of Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene. I'd like...

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Thursday, June 11, 2009. Nature, Healer and Restorer. After my thoughts on nature in this post. And this post, it seems timely to share Ann's. Many fruitful thoughts and links about the restorative power of nature, in particular, it's educating power. (I love her nature table in particular.). Wednesday, June 03, 2009. And Mr. Butch (yes, that was his name) was telling him all about it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Boys that make me smile. Ask Dr. Sears.

A Mother's Smile: July 2009

http://amotherssmile.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Sunday, July 19, 2009. This afternoon we gathered with some good friends to celebrate a birthday. Two beautifully pregnant women were part of said gathering. Later in the evening, I noticed Gabriel patting his little round stomach and looking with satisfaction into the mirror. I didn't really make much of it until prayer time, when we were thanking God for things that made us happy. Gabriel's contribution: "I'm happy that I'm going to have Petey's baby!

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Monday, July 26, 2010. Final Thoughts on Kristin Lavransdatter. Hello to the faithful few who made it through all of Kristin Lavransdatter! Unfortunately someone requested my copy of the book, which I actually finished reading over a month ago, so my thoughts will have to be a bit here-and-there and without page citations. I was so engrossed in the book I both did and did not want it to end! Independent woman or woman of the Church? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A Mother's Smile: Book Nook Book Club: Kristin Lavransdatter, Part I: The Wreath

http://amotherssmile.blogspot.com/2010/05/book-nook-book-club-kristin.html

Thoughts on faith, family, formation and food. Monday, May 31, 2010. Book Nook Book Club: Kristin Lavransdatter, Part I: The Wreath. I have two confessions to make as I begin this "check-in" on our reading of. Appropriate for a novel full of confessions and secret revelations, don't you think? First, I am about 100 pages from finishing the entire three volumes. It has been an engrossing novel that has held my attention throughout! In addition to referring back to my previous post on Part I. And Catholici...

The adventures of auntie booger. Tracking ordinary and extraordinary happenings in the life of this explorer. Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Finding My Way To Porcupine. The icicle-clad cliff, topped with hemlocks. I still remember the terror I felt during the first year of my wilderness immersion program, Anake, in Washington state. My instructors wanted me to wander. Wander? Just go out into the woods and follow my curiosity? Hell, no, thank you very much. The cliff was mesmerizing. Icicles, moss, sw...

Is the design/build school I'll be interning at this summer. Don't worry- "A Groovy Place To Be" is not it's slogan, although doesn't it sound like it fits? I believe that there is a better way, a more beautiful way, a more wholistic and healthy approach to building. Yestermorrow does too! Every season Yestermorrow hires about five intern.

The adventures of auntie booger. Tracking ordinary and extraordinary happenings in the life of this explorer. Sunday, August 17, 2008. Cycle hard, cycle long. Ah, Sunday mornings in Waterbury, Vermont, one of the 3.5 places in this state where you can actually get cell phone reception. Laying under a tree in dappled mid-morning sun with my cell phone glued to my ear, dad mentioned that he and Murray went on a 40 mile bike ride yesterday. No kidding- so did I! Our Baby Wolfs: October 2011

Monday, October 31, 2011. Moses has developed a strange habit of substituting the first syllable of certain words with "Mc". For example, he consistently makes the following adjustments:. I'm pretty sure that he knows the correct pronunciations, but he still insists on saying things this way. Maybe it's his Irish heritage manifesting itself. and the only apparent manifestation of it, at that! Trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good for me.". Monday, October 24, 2011.
