History, suburbia and the bankruptcy →. Author’s Q&A / University of Michigan Press. August 24, 2012. Q&A for Ford Road. The University of Michigan Press:. S main character, Kay, you grew up in suburban Detroit and became a historian. To what extent is Kay based on you? In a novel so clearly conceived as a kind of love letter to particular times and places from my Michigan past, this question was always going to be asked! This is a process I recognize, and in writing. Yet despite her formal training as a...

I was living quietly in the suburbs, officer! This bankruptcy business has nothing to do with me! Suburbanites had less and less to do with Detroit, yet when we travelled out of state or abroad for vacations, we continued to tell people we were Detroiters,. Not only because nobody had heard of Garden City or the other suburbs, but ...

Ethical Issues | Living with Autism
https://dylanandliz.wordpress.com/ethical-issues
A Ethical Issues for Me. Keeping a blog about the life of a disabled person who cannot give ‘informed consent’ clearly raises ethical issues. Carers of people with limited communication (as is the situation with Dylan) negotiate ethical issues on a daily basis, a process of decision-making and review which means ethical practice is dynamic and continually evolving. Reflects these considerations and my attempt to respond ethically to them. I will benefit from this process of review, which encourages me to...

The Humber Bridge | Living with Autism
https://dylanandliz.wordpress.com/2015/07/30/the-humber-bridge
Posted in Policy and Provision. Before I had my own family I used to say that for every child I gave birth to I would adopt another. This seemed a small but realistic way of balancing the desire to have a biological child with the desperate need of already-born children for a family. S; Dylan needed me and it wasn’t possible to undertake such commitments with him in tow. So I made donations to charity instead; I might not be able to give my time but I could at least do this. Some years ago Dylan and I we...
Ears Are Really Useful Things | Living with Autism
https://dylanandliz.wordpress.com/2015/07/26/ears-are-useful-things
Ears Are Really Useful Things. Posted in Language and Communication. This is not the post I had intended to make this week but, as is often the case, something happened. Ears: I’ve mentioned these before as Dylan has a habit of trying to remove them (other people’s not his own) when he is anxious. I hadn’t realised until this week, however, how useful ears can be. This week’s incident happened at 9pm on Friday night. Dylan was in his room watching. Thomas the Tank Engine. I thought to myself,. July 26, 2...

Elizabeth | Living with Autism

Posted in A Parent's World. This week is the start of the academic year in England; pretty soon I will be deep in teaching. Although September no longer marks a transition point for Dylan I don’t think I will ever lose the anxiety that the end of summer brings for parents of children with disabilities. Each year I would live on my nerves through the first weeks of term, hoping desperately that all would be well. I’m really glad that I took that ‘ next step. Is there a science to it? As well as the checkl...

Amy Kenney | author/illustrator
November 14, 2012. September 21, 2012. Once Upon A Time…there was a woman named Amy. She lived in an ordinary house, in an ordinary town, in an ordinary part of the country. She had a very handsome, ordinary husband. She had lovely, ordinary children. She looked ordinary and sounded ordinary too. Little did people know that ordinary Amy had a secret curse. Amy was cursed with the need to over-complicate everything about her life. Ordinary. Starting a blog? One more thing…. September 20, 2012. The beauty ...

Dreaming of what's next. Sorry for the lag. I've been traveling and planing. so much to fill you in on in the coming posts. To be at work. This was me, minus the jewelry, a little over a year and a half ago. To be 'elsewhere' has it's romance and advantages. To be 'here' does too. This posting from a few years ago by http:/ stylebyemilyhenderson.com still gets me excited for halloween festivities! It doesn't take much! I'm going to take a wee break from blogging, but I'll be back. A. Oh so very me.
