An Alabama Plate

A blog about trying to eat better and figuring out what better means. Thursday, April 7, 2011. It has been a while. This one has been busy. As with many new blogs, my postings have waned. Lets see if we can remedy that. This weekend has potential as I will be attending the Magnolia State BBQ Cookoff in Columbus, MS. To kick it off, here is one of my favorite recipes I learned from my peach selling days at the Griffins in West Alabama/East Mississippi. 4-8 crooks of yellow squash. Wednesday, March 16, 2011.

An Alabama Plate: Homemade Bread

http://www.analabamaplate.blogspot.com/2011/03/homemade-bread.html

A blog about trying to eat better and figuring out what better means. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. Sorry it has been a while. There has been much going on in this one's life. White bread flour is really good as a base for bread because it is light a airy. Because it is basically sugar (compared to whole grain four) the yeast can eat it really well. I use about half white bread flour and half something else. Note: Sourdough requires the use of starter not yeast. Separate post for that later. 1 Cup warm milk.

A blog about trying to eat better and figuring out what better means. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Home Made French Fries. Now, based on what all I have stated in my last post as my food goals, these certainly miss on the healthy part. But if I am going to eat fries, why not made out of local potatoes? Wednesday, January 19, 2011. In that sense we all have the goal of to eat. But for me eating is a much more dense subject. So, here are my goals in eating. 4) Eat food that is part of a better social, mora...

A blog about trying to eat better and figuring out what better means. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Now is the time to get that spring garden in. My compost from last year is lovely. It is moist, rich, and looking like dirt. This time we planted 3 lettuce varieties, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, onions, beets, and breakfast radishes. If you live in Alabama and are wondering what you should plant - here is the gardening guide. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Green Beans and Tomatoes.

Enjoying Food Fresh From the Farm. Newer posts →. January 20, 2011. Today I tried the squash braid bread. I was afraid it would be difficult to cut up the squash, but it turned out to be pretty easy. The squash yielded pretty much exactly 2 cups of squash after it was cooked and mashed, and my recipe calls for 1 cup and recommends freezing the remainder, so I did and I have enough for bread another day. If I had been clever I would have just doubled my recipe, but alas. Almost Ready for the Oven. Essenti...
