Thursday, May 15, 2008. This Is the Speech I Gave. Hey folks. So I got the chance to speak at my own graduation last week. If you were there, you heard what was, technically, the seventh draft of my speech. The first was about four times longer and completely different in its path, and I'll post it here in a day or two. But first, this is the speech I gave:. 8221; but rather, “Who am I, what is this faith I have been professing, and what does it mean to me? 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled ...

Wednesday, May 20, 2009. For years – probably since high school – I have categorized the worthwhile paths a person might take in one of two ways: either they would strive to change the world in a grand and impersonal fashion, by, say, curing a common affliction, or they would make it their goal to change lives personally, one at a time, face to face – like a teacher might. . It was a handy distinction. . Everybody fits; everybody’s got something they can do. . And for many of them, that means cutting o...

Any news site – they’ve all got plenty of the latest information up. Who was killed, how many. A timeline of events, a list of complaints from the parents to the police, a section for mourning, a section for witnesses to describe the events. Posted by The Night Watchman. Links to this post. Friday, April 6, 2007. A Frost on the Day Before Easter. But e...

Saturday, June 20, 2009. In re: The Efficient Operation of Schools. I am an educator, exasperated already with the system of education. This means less than nothing in some ways; I’m one of thousands – probably millions – of the 8.3 million teachers in America who finds himself insulted and angered by an institution which systematically rewards the tame and marginally effective while weeding out the challenging, the extraordinary, the new, the bold, and the good. Their interest only seems active as they ...

I thought about heading into the territory of “change,” since both candidates have decided to make the word their mantra this election, but since everybody always. Talks about Obama and change, I think I’ll talk about taxes and fiscal responsibility instead. Frankly, this article says it better than I ever could, and I think you should read it.]. 160; . Saturday, December 22, 2007. In Defense of Christian Education, or, How CCU Broke My Faith. This is long. I ask you to read it anyway, and to tell me your own thoughts. Strangely, I found that attending a school entirely composed of a large group of similar mindset to my own had a much different effect on me. I’ll admit the possibility that I and my friends are flukes, aberrations in the system, but all the same I’d like to explore how we turned out as we did. Posted by The Night Watchman. I found myself...

Wednesday, January 14, 2009. Mixing Myself Up with the Characters - Am I Alone in This? I might also mention Hardy’s excruciating Jude the Obscure, which hurts even more when you believe yourself to be living an unnaturally parallel life to that of the title character. Did I make the same choice that I would have made had I not read the book, or did my self-identification with the character of Jude cause me, even slightly, to choose a behavior more like his, or what I would imagine his to be? I think of ...

Company for Dinner

Saturday, August 27, 2011. Remember that time I tried to be a train conductor? Here's a recap of the hiring session:. HR lady had a cheese blintz fixation, and the first hour of the orientation was dominated by increasingly dire predictions of our future in train conducting. One little known fact is that trains, much like dobermans, can smell fear. So much better than being a train conductor. Wish me luck. P to the T to the B. September 6, 2011 at 7:46 PM. This is a glorious peak! Dreams and Sour Grapes.
