Century, as nearby cities began to encroach on the Village of Kohler, Walter Kohler became concerned that all the green space surrounding the village would disappear. In an effort to preserve those green spaces, Walter purchased about 3,500 acres of land along the perimeter of the village. Decades later, in an effort to protect the valuable resource his uncle had staked, Herbert V. Kohler, Jr. established River Wildlife.

It was host to royalty and luminaries until, over the years, it fell into disrepair.
