Bhikkhu's Blog: Life of the Buddha

http://bhikkhublog.blogspot.com/2009/05/life-of-buddha.html

Theravada monk blogs about Buddhist philosophy and other random things. May 21, 2009. Life of the Buddha. An excellent BBC production on the Life of the Buddha. Very well done. Here is the YouTube page where you can watch the remaining segments;. Life of the Buddha. Quite a fine piece of work; the presentation of the Buddha's teachings is sympathetic and accurate, the look and feel of the dramatic scenes are believable. I saw in the movie that non of the bhikhus, as well as the Buddha itself, have hair.

http://bhikkhublog.blogspot.com/2010/07/announcing-pali-tutor.html

Theravada monk blogs about Buddhist philosophy and other random things. Jul 25, 2010. Announcing The Pali Tutor. The result is the Pali Tutor. An online application that lets the user do interactive memory drills for Pali vocabulary and declensions. I may add conjugations at some future time. If anyone finds this useful, drop me a line. Especially write to me if you find any mistakes or bugs. I think you almost have a useful application, but there are some problems which make me unlikely to use it. Navig...

Bhikkhu's Blog: Questions Raised

http://bhikkhublog.blogspot.com/2009/12/questions-raised.html

Theravada monk blogs about Buddhist philosophy and other random things. Dec 17, 2009. Yokie, in the comments, asks. What we want to know (as the verdict is not conclusive) whether those 4 Bhikkhunis are still valid under the theravada tradition and is Bodhiyana monastery still valid under the theravada tradition (as we find that it is. The first question is easy to answer; Ajahn Brahmavamso is still a Theravada bhikkhu and Bodhinyana is still a legitimate Theravada monastery. No one disputes this. Not ev...

Theravada monk blogs about Buddhist philosophy and other random things. Sep 8, 2010. Why is There Something Rather than Nothing? The publication of Stephen Hawking's latest book The Grand Design. Has stirred some new fire into the old embers of metaphysical speculation. Specifically, the discussion centres on one of the perennial Big Questions; why is there something rather than nothing? Isn't the very concept of a "law" rather anthropomorphic? The Buddha's position was that such questions are fundamenta...

Bhikkhu's Blog: The Bhikkhuni Controversy

http://bhikkhublog.blogspot.com/2009/12/bhikkhuni-controversy.html

Theravada monk blogs about Buddhist philosophy and other random things. Dec 4, 2009. There is now a great deal of chatter in various Buddhist corners of the internet regarding this series of events. Some harsh things are being said, and there is not always a full understanding of all the complex issues involved. The next few paragraphs deal with the historical background, if you are already familiar with this information you can skip on ahead). About the same time, the western branches of the Wat Pah Pon...

The Journalist and the Buddha. SEEING THE WAY IT IS NOW. Laquo; Teaching My Way to Nibbana. Concern for Everybody ». January 22, 2009. Ive been reading Gil Fronsdals wonderful book, The Issue at Hand. Time after time I get to a sentence, I read it, and I need to put the book down to let the idea sink in for a while, even for a day or two, before I start reading again. Its a terrific book - and. From Gils web site. Here is one of those sentences that stopped me:. The various Mahayana sutras (Diamond, Hear...

The Journalist and the Buddha. SEEING THE WAY IT IS NOW. Laquo; October 2007. February 2008 ». January 10, 2008. Why Can't Journalism Talk About Its Own Morals? ROCHESTER, MN - As the New Year rolls in like an inexorable tide, I have watched the elections, done some reading and made a resolution as a journalist, as a citizen, and as a guy. It's a resolution about, um, morality. I'm excited but nervous to be writing this. But it's just this pigeonholing of anyone who talks about morals that fuels my drive...

The Journalist and the Buddha. SEEING THE WAY IT IS NOW. Laquo; January 2008. September 2008 ». February 20, 2008. The Buddha, the Dharma and the Media. MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin - There is an old interviewing trick journalists use to get people to say things far more intimate than they planned to reveal. I became a serial exaggerator of social trends. Increasingly, I started defining every trend as ' new and important,' ' widespread,' or ' emblematic.'. And I began avoiding humble but specific, useful words.

ROCHESTER, MN - Jim Reynolds began his 40-minute talk to a group of Mayo Clinic physicians and health care workers last week by closing his eyes, putting his palms together and intoning an ancient chant in a dead language. When I lived in monasteries in Thailand, the meditation halls sometimes had human skeletons hanging in them, Ajahn told ...

The Journalist and the Buddha. SEEING THE WAY IT IS NOW. Laquo; A Son of Minnesota Returns as a Worldly-Wise Monk. January 21, 2009. Teaching My Way to Nibbana. Students in my undergraduate journalism class at Carleton College would never imagine, I’ll bet, that I sincerely regard each one of them as being ethically spotless, all-knowing, absolutely perfect human beings who at one point in the cosmic past was my dear mother. To which the Buddha responds:. A famous scripture quoting the Buddha begins with...

Dhammapada by Ven Nàrada. 8221;Know truth as truth and untruth as untruth ” ”Be a lamp unto thyself ” These are the words of the Buddha…. October 28, 2006. Two aspects of Dharma practice. Posted by bhikkhu under Bhikkhu. Here, I want to suggest that to learn from the Buddha, in a practical context, primarily means to learn two aspects of the Dharma that ideally should run parallel. I will call these self-transformation and self-transcendence. Elimination means the removal of unwholesome qualities from ou...
