지구상에 최초에 존재하는 생물로서 핵이 없는 것이 특징이다. 종류로는 세균류와 남조류가 있으며 이들은 모두 단세포 생물로 분류할수 있다. 진핵생물에는 핵 안에 DNA가 존재하지만 원핵생물은 핵이라는 개념이 없이 핵상체에 DNA가 집중되어있고 세포소기관이 존재하지 않아서 진핵세포보다 구조가 간단하다. 따라서 원핵세포는 물질대사를 관여하는 효소들이 세포막에 붙어 있으며 종족 번식을 할때에는 특별한 성이 관련된것이 아니라 분열법으로 자가복제를 하며 분열을 할때에는 염색체와 방추사가 형성이 되지않는다.
