Birds Brews and Blither

Wednesday, August 23, 2017. For those of you in the dark (buh-dum-dum), these past few weeks, the Great American Eclipse of 2017 has been incredibly hyped. Lets face it - it should be. This type of eclipse involves the moon moving directly between the earth and the sun. Recognizing that the sun is basically 400 times larger than the moon but is also 400 times farther away, the sizes match almost perfectly. If the two line up correctly with each other and the earth, an eclipse ensues. And inspire the arts.

Birds Brews and Blither: March 2015

http://birdsbrewsandblither.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The Old Lady Dumped Me. Yes, you read that right. The old lady dumped me. No, not Natalie. (I can't stand it when husbands call their wife "an old lady". In fact, I hate it). It was Lady Justice. As you may recall. I was selected for potential jury duty. Yesterday was the day. Sadly, I was not selected but I can tell you it was an experience. First, based on the process of selecting the jury, they give you some insight as to the nature of the case. Attempted murder. It's called...

Birds Brews and Blither: June 2014

http://birdsbrewsandblither.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 30, 2014. Natalie and I snuck out for some fireworks last night. In the future, I'll stay back a bit. We found ourselves a bit close to the action. Some of the cooler shots were not completely in the frame. Oh well. I took over 125 images. Some suck. That happens. Below are some of the cooler ones. For any photographers out there, know that all images were f8, ISO 100 and shutter speeds were either 2 or 3 seconds. The camera was, of course, on a tripod. Thursday, June 19, 2014. The lime, whe...

Birds Brews and Blither: Ugh

http://birdsbrewsandblither.blogspot.com/2015/03/ugh.html

Wednesday, March 11, 2015. This device is amazing. It's called a flash drive or thumb drive. Not much bigger than your thumb (hence the name), they function as a portable storage device for computers. Gone are the days of floppy disks and CDs. These things are awesome. Note - they are only awesome when you know where they are. Somewhere in southeast Michigan, in a yet-to-be determined location, is my flash drive. Oh no, not just any flash drive. MY flash drive. Labels: Back to School. Sites where I lurk.

Birds Brews and Blither: October 2014

http://birdsbrewsandblither.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 23, 2014. A Bit of a Bite. As I type, I'm here on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. The much-hyped partial solar eclipse is underway. Sadly, for those of us in Detroit, the sun is setting as the moon is taking bigger and bigger bites. To make matters worse, a cloud layer in the distance is killing it. Nevertheless, I saw .I dunno.a quarter of the sun blotted out by the moon? In any case, the view from the observation deck at Sherzer Hall is stunning at sunset. Was off the charts.

Birds Brews and Blither: December 2014

http://birdsbrewsandblither.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 25, 2014. Just in case you are curious, this Santa was brought to you by Mother Nature. It is a Milkweed pod cleverly disguised by my co-worker Jane.). Monday, December 22, 2014. If you have ever paid attention to a magician, they often seem to say "Ta-daaaah" at the end of a trick that has gone well. This would contrast with "Oh., uh.ahhhhh, call a paramedic please" after something goes really wrong. So I'll say it - "Ta-daaaah! What have I been up to? Natalie and I got married! The l...

Mostly Birds (but not always): May 2014

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 17, 2014. Want Flies With That? Not really, because almost any bird farther than 35' was partially or fully obscured by vegetation. The 6 feet of gained close focus enabled me to get photos of some very cooperative feeding birds. Chestnut-sided Warbler eating caterpillar. And an order of flies. You got a little something right there. Here are some photos of warblers without their mouths full. Female Cape May Warbler. Blackpoll Warbler craning for a view. Mrs Black-throated Blue Warbler.

Mostly Birds (but not always): August 2015

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 3, 2015. Save the Drammatus for your Mammatus. Last evening a line of intense thunderstorms accompanied by high winds (and even a tornado in Huron County) rolled across Michigan toppling trees and knocking out power to tens of thousands. I was awoken from my pre-work nap by my alarm clock as I had slept through the whole storm. Taken from my driveway. Sensing a rare photo opportunity I grabbed my camera and headed toward the lake shore in the waning dusk. Things in the sky. Things I like: ...

Saturday, April 25, 2015. Loons Over Old Yard. In the cropped version of the above photo the barcodes on the neck were clearly visible. Below are cropped shots of loons flying much higher. Hopefully I'll get some on the yardlist of my new yard in the upcoming week. Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Ludington Merlin and Bonaparte's Gulls. Merlin on State Route 116 leading to Ludington State Park. Pair of Red-breasted Mergansers on Pere Marquette Lake. Saw one Common Loon out over Lake Michigan,. This Osprey was on...

Mostly Birds (but not always): February 2015

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 27, 2015. New Backyard Bird List. Closed on my new house today. Put the feeders out and had no takers. Only bird seen was a American Crow flyover. The house shown above is not in my new neighborhood but rather about a mile from the house I've been staying in since November. Sunday, February 15, 2015. 2015 Great Backyard Bird Count. Didn't get any unusual birds at the feeders, but I did get plenty of photo-ops of the birds that did show. I ended up with thirteen species. Blue Jay - 6.

Thursday, September 25, 2014. Imperial Moth Life Cycle. After finding an Imperial Moth back in July, I finally have a complete series of photos showing the progression of the offspring from egg to chrysalis. The above moth laid over 100 eggs over a 2 day period. The caterpillars hatched about 2 weeks later. The caterpillars fed on Sycamore or Maple leaves for 6 weeks. They grew to 5" long. The fifth skin shedding revealed the pupa or chrysalis. Discarded skin and resultant chrysalis. The Red-tailed Hawk ...

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 28, 2015. Finally back on a more birder-friendly schedule after spending most of peak migration on the dreaded dayshift. This morning I took a walk along the Lake Michigan shore after work to see if any shorebirds blew in on the southerly winds. Only shorebirds I saw were Spotted Sandpipers.. Here's a guy confident in his relationship. This guy either is in over his head or pulled a Kobe Bryant. Common Raven minding its own business. Crow also minding the raven's business. Thursday, October 30, 2014. Snowy Owl Ludington 10/30/2014. For the past month I've been taking on a career change of sorts along with a. Relocation. With all this uncertainty I just wish there was some sort of sign that I'm making the right choice. Until that sign comes I'll continue taking walks along the lake shore with my camera searching for clarity. Early Date for Mason County per Dave Dister. On Sunday I found a couple of Lapland Longspurs mixed with a few Snow Buntings. Monday, October 27, 2014.

Mostly Birds (but not always): Old Yard Review

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2015/07/paradise-has-price-and-it-can-now-be.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. My one-third acre of paradise in Southgate has been sold. In my ten years at that suburban Detroit location I observed 140 species of birds. The best was the first and so far only Wayne County record Rufous Hummingbird that arrived November 7, 2011 and stayed until the 14th. All photos in this post were taken from the yard. The Rufous on fire. Best Loon shot from my yard. Cardinal photobombed by White-throated Sparrow. Northern Flicker and American Robin. Every September during the...

http://mostlybirdsbutnotalways.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 28, 2014. Up until this morning my one day record for Common Loons flying over my yard was 11. This morning I had that by 7:05 AM and proceeded to get 24 more before 10 o'clock. The 35 loons were more than I had ever counted for an entire spring. Previous record was 30 in 2011. They flew over as singles, pairs and a group each of 4,5 and 6. 5 of the group of 6. Close-up of above bird. 4 of the group of 5. Close-up of above birds. Common Loon on Saturday. Moonrise at dawn on Sunday. I know n...

Monday, March 30, 2015. Pileated Woodpecker in the Yard. Even before we closed on our new house I noticed the rectangular holes excavated into one of the yard's pines. Its a sure sign of Pileated Woodpeckers. After living in the house for three weeks the Pileateds finally showed up. Saturday, March 21, 2015. With my move Goldfinches have replaced House Sparrows as the nuisance bird. Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Northern Lights 3/17/2015 (with video). Green glow visible in twilight. Sunday, February 6, 2011. The White cheeked Pintail or Bahama Pintail (Anas bahamensis) is a dabbling duck of the Caribbean, South America, and the Galápagos Islands.[2]. Like many southern ducks, the sexes are similar. It is mainly brown with white cheeks and a red-based grey bill (young birds lack the pink). It cannot be confused with any other duck in its range.[2]. This species occurs on waters with a degree of salinity, such as brackish lakes, estuaries and mangrove swamps.[2]. The Pintail or Northe...
