This blog will serve as a running critique of industrial agriculture, a clearinghouse for info on sustainable farming, and a working manifesto for a liberation politics based on food. Monday, October 03, 2005. Dominant traits II: Why GM soy looks set to swamp Europe. All of that has changed. The word "farm" has become a marketing tool to move real estate, and little else. The only other entity with "farm" attached to its name on our road is "Clark's Creek Farm"- a suburban-style subdivision. A PR front f...

This blog will serve as a running critique of industrial agriculture, a clearinghouse for info on sustainable farming, and a working manifesto for a liberation politics based on food. Wednesday, May 18, 2005. Big Ag is getting nervous about energy costs. The hand-wringing reveals much about the energy-intensive nature of industrial agriculture- and its lack of imagination regarding alternatives. Here's an Associated Press article. Is about $50 billion. 70 percent of the loot. That's an average of abo...

This blog will serve as a running critique of industrial agriculture, a clearinghouse for info on sustainable farming, and a working manifesto for a liberation politics based on food. Wednesday, September 21, 2005. The organic label controversy: an update and an exchange. As I reported here Monday, the Organic Consumers Association. OCA) raised an alarm that a Senate Committee might, as early as Tuesday, "acting in haste and near-total secrecy," make serious changes to national organic standards. OTA has...

Ripening plums that got "picked" too early? - Can-Do...

http://not-quite-rural.livejournal.com/22500.html

Ripening plums that got "picked" too early? No Matter Where You Are. 21 August 2008 @ 04:51 pm. Ripening plums that got "picked" too early? This is our first year with a plum tree, and we had about 2 dozen growing very nicely until last night/this morning. Something came and knocked down about half of them, ate most of those, and broke one of the branches holding some of the other ripening fruit. As I was trying to rig a net over the last branch of fruit, it broke off. :/. 3 comments Leave a comment.

MaverickEats: October 2005

MaverickEats records some of the culinary adventures of the farmers at Maverick Farms. Devoted to the pleasures of the table, MaverickEats believes a revolution against industrial food will gain force when people reclaim the habit of eating well. Monday, October 24, 2005. Steak with garlic red-wine sauce; sauteed arugula; crispy roast potatoes. Recently, after a day of heavy fall work, I made the following meal. The steak came from a small nearby farm that lets its cows feed on pasture. Turn heat off and...

cheap veggie gourmet: November 2005

http://cheapveggiegourmet.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html

A blog detailing ways to enjoy a gourmet vegetarian diet on the cheap. Check out recipes, food stories, tips and techniques. Saturday, November 26, 2005. Just popping in here to make a quick post about a successful food experiment: egg rolls! Egg roll skins are pretty cheap, and you can fill them with all sorts of cheap stuff, too. Ours contained:. Sugar snap peas (not cheap, really, but I only put one or two in each roll). Fry for a couple of minutes a side in an inch or so of peanut oil. Damn tasty.

cheap veggie gourmet: June 2005

http://cheapveggiegourmet.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html

A blog detailing ways to enjoy a gourmet vegetarian diet on the cheap. Check out recipes, food stories, tips and techniques. Sunday, June 19, 2005. I'm moving in about ten days. This has called for me to one, spend less money, since I've had to drop a significant amount of cahs on deposits and the like; and two, pare down my pantry stores so I'm not schlepping forty cans of tomatoes across town. Thankfully, these are highly compatible objectives. One can kidney beans, drained and rinsed. Cumin, to taste.

Out On The Lawn: December 2005

Out On The Lawn. Chillin, shilling, and possibly a small amount of illing. Saturday, December 31, 2005. It's been "real". Good memories, not-so-good memories, bad memories, whatever. Memorable, on the whole. Next year (ie, tomorrow), perhaps I will reflect on the whole of 2005. Posted by Lawnmower at 5:25 PM. Friday, December 30, 2005. I have Internet once more! So does the existence of absolute morals necessitate a God? What is the ultimate point. How can they be said to have any existence? The Canker S...

Garden update, crossposted about - Can-Do. No Matter Where You Are. 24 June 2008 @ 08:32 pm. Garden update, crossposted about. If you make a 90 degree turn to the left and look through my daughters, there's my house. Note the railing with the giant zucchini hanging from it. And a gratuitous cute kid photo. The primary zucchini is growing like crazy and may be the first to have to be repotted if it keeps up with the speed! One yellow leaf, otherwise looking good! I've been slowly changing my lifestyle over the years, without realizing my drive to live simply, frugally, and at least somewhat self sufficiently were ultimately leading towards urban homesteading. 1 comment Leave a comment. A young widow's journey through grief, survival and rebuilding of life. The Winds of Change. August 19, 2014 by saird. Four Years. Today. Four Years. I say it to myself, it slides off my tongue and becomes real. It seems like it all just happened and somehow, at the same time, it does feel like four years. Four years of changes, four years of. Pie without a net. Add a teacup and a half of sugar, a tiny pinch of salt, and make up the pie. While it's baking, send your friend to the grocery store to buy a whisk since 1337 as you may be, there's no fucking way you're whipping cream with a fork. Serve it with a nice sweet Sauternes and sprinkle the plated pie with sugar and because it's mind-bendingly sour. I'm a big fan of white bean soup with cabbage. Or with turnips. It's extra good with cured pig of any kind. Easy enough here, right? I skipped ...

Probably the most widely adopted practice of lean manufacturing is 5S. 5S details how to maintain an effective workspace or homeplace. It can be quite an undertaking the first few times around, so it might be best to start small, such as one closet.
