I undertook a small wardrive recently from a popular retail park in Manchester, England to a landmark hotel located within the city centre. This means that an attacker could break into 49% of wireless networks. Trivially and the other 51% would depend on additional authentication mechanisms and the attackers computing power available. That is still almost half of the identified networks which pose an easy target for a skilled assailiant.
