http://vodkaandequations.blogspot.com/2015/01/pipelines-ebp6.html
Saturday, January 31, 2015. The Alaskan Pipeline. Source Ryan McFarland. I tried to fiddle with my blog layout, so hopefully you'll see more photos in their original size. As it turns out, the average computer monitor isn't quite so restricted as it was when Awesome, Inc. designed this template, and it's nice to be able to show pictures in their original size and splendour. So we're addicted, and it's big money. Money so big that Canada's dollar is under 80 cents USD, down about twenty cents since th...

Vodka & Equations: Universal Public Transit [MUt2]
http://vodkaandequations.blogspot.com/2013/11/universal-public-transit-mut2.html
Monday, November 18, 2013. Universal Public Transit [MUt2]. OC Transpo's St. Laurent Station. In my last post. I discussed the merits of enjoying alcoholic beverages for their deliciousness rather than their psychoactivity. Now, this indeed raises the issue of drinking and driving, which is a legitimate concern. After just one standard alcoholic beverage, your reaction times are significantly diminished. So what do you do? Now, what if the whole city did it? I think it might be a consideration. That's a ...

Monday, March 2, 2015. Election 2015: Harper, the Proroguer. Prime Minister Harper, remembering the days of high oil prices. Source. After almost four whole years after the Tories took power, we are once again in an election year. I'll admit that I'm pretty excited at this prospect as a fan of evidence-based practices and a proud Canadian that has been repeatedly. By the elected representatives. So, Harper the Proroguer. Take for example the census. Canada was a world leader in excellent census data,...

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. The Joker Effect, Batman, and Game Theory. The Joker, as envisioned by Doug Mahnke. Source. I am not entirely certain how many times I will ever say this, but I stumbled across a truly fascinating paper in the Journal of Theoretical Biology (thanks, Reddit! Recently, and would like to share the results as best I can. Not being a theoretical biologist or an avid practitioner of game theory, my understanding may be somewhat limited, but it is exciting nonetheless. Thus, successfu...

Vodka & Equations: Homelessness, and a Can of Soup. [EBP8]
http://vodkaandequations.blogspot.com/2015/07/homelessness-and-can-of-soup-ebp8.html
Sunday, July 26, 2015. Homelessness, and a Can of Soup. [EBP8]. Cans of soup produced to celebrate the anniversary of Warhol's painting. Source. Oh man, a spoon too? How are you doing so good? I've been lucky." I replied without thinking. It's due to this matter of luck that I am so excited about things like the Calgary Homeless Foundation. Since my finding out about Calgary's program, the city of Medicine Hat has announced. Agree, it seems only logical to offer programs like this if a) you'll save money...

Vodka & Equations: December 2011
http://vodkaandequations.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 29, 2011. I have learned that a typical week for me involves at least one instance of surprise interest in a topic I had previously found mundane. A week or so ago, this proved to be the sunflower. I have not heavily researched this topic, but I stumbled across a few tidbits of information I hope we shall all find interesting. Used for fuel, I can certainly appreciate having a perennial food crop. Graphical representation of sunflower floret placement. Source. Saturday, December 3, 2011.

Wednesday, November 16, 2011. Movember, and Facial Hair. Karl Marx. Political ideologies notwithstanding, the man had a remarkable beard. Source. In the interest of full disclosure, I myself am a bearded-Canadian, and probably biased. I decided after shaving my mutton chops three summers ago that:. 1) I look silly and awkward without facial hair,. 2) Not having facial hair when winter strikes is terrible, and. 3) I would try my best to never be bald-faced again. Not the moustache.". After the coffee has ...

Sunday, August 28, 2011. The hominoids evolved from a common ancestor. Source. I have been thinking a lot about genetic algorithms lately. The idea was introduced to me here. Where I lost many an hour watching cars evolve to fit different tracks. I later saw it being used in the lab where I did my honours thesis, with a peer attempting to design better fuel cells. Perhaps I shall start with an explanation of what exactly these genetic algorithms (GAs) are. Links to this post. Thursday, August 25, 2011.
