Live Learn Love: November 2014
http://livelearnlove-mw.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
LIVE now. LEARN from yesterday. LOVE always. Saturday, 22 November 2014. While in Cape Town working on my thesis I had my birthday, and I decided what I really wanted to do was go and feed the squirrels. So off we went on Saturday to Company Gardens with a picnic basket packed to find some squirrels. It turned out to be a most beautiful day, although a little on the hot side! Time for a snooze. With full stomachs we lazed about on the picnic blankets, all the while keeping an eye out for the furry tailed...

Saturday, 13 September 2014. Book Review: The Ultimate Companion for Birding in Southern Africa. This book is a masterpiece, but my initial reaction on hearing about this book for the first time was definitely “Not another birdbook! 8221; as South Africa may be one of the most prodigious countries for producing bird books or updates to bird books, given the per capita number of bird watchers in the country. The book's official website: http:/ www.birdbook.co.za/. Front covers and box (to the right).

Fynbos Endemic Birds Survey hosted by Blue Hill Escape: July 2014

Friday, 25 July 2014. Last month we had our first intern from the Living Lands, Ted – from Holland. Living Lands is a collaborative partnership based on the eastern sections of the Baviaanskloof, working with the community and really interested in ecosystem services. Ted was looking for a restoration type project for a third year university assignment. Perfect – we had just the job. Mud puddles and crumbling canyons, we were able to run some models. Turns out even now several years later, and despite nat...

Tuesday, 29 April 2014. Orange-breasted Sunbird: The Bold and the Beautiful. You know you're in the Fynbos once you hear the distinctive tseu tseu, a noise a bit like that a child would make to imitate the laser guns from Star Wars. And watching them darting around the proteas I can't help feeling they are playing, rather than engaged in the eternal fight for life. The following is the text of a pro-bona article penned for the most recent issue of African Birdlife:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Post-docto...

Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Publication: Aspects of the ecology and morphology of the Protea Seedeater. Its probably four years since I saw my first Protea Seedeater – while on an exploratory walk shortly after first arriving to Blue Hill at the end of 2010. Anja and I were sitting in the shade of old growth Fynbos when a pair came to investigate us. I remember the occasion as the birds seemed rather relaxed and I was able to get this photo:. This is the abstract of the article:. Also known as Protea Can...

Sunday, 31 May 2015. Saturday, 2 May 2015. Sweet and Sour: me and my Meerkat, Chutney. December 2013: it was my last bird survey of the year; over 900 counts conducted. I’d surveyed this route near a small section of the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve over ten times, found and documented the first Black Harrier nest. In the region; and never seen a Meerkat. It was just past Christmas, and I had spent some hours with a beautiful pair of Blue Cranes. Soon we were both on our way back to Blue Hill. Half a...

Friday, 15 August 2014. Fighting Fire in the Fynbos. Legally, landowners need to have fire breaks and adequate fire fighting equipment on their properties. However, one hike into the Cape Fold mountains and you will realise that the feasibility of creating and maintaining fire breaks many kilometres long over steep terrain intersected by deep gorges is completely impractical. Likewise, accessing remote areas where fires can result from lightning strikes or even rockfalls is sometimes impossible. We exper...

Thursday, 23 April 2015. RIP: the cascades male. Come to think of it, had there been any rings on the male bird? Krista didn’t recall seeing any. So here’s to you cascades male, male 206. Thanks to you we now know so much more about the secret life of Cape Rockjumpers. He represents the first ever recovery of a ringed Cape Rockjumper in the SAFRING database. The following photo of the cascades male was taken by project volunteer Dr Dean Portelli:. Monday, 6 April 2015. What makes a good blog post? By sen...
