Art and spirit kateri ewing. Charcoal is a messy satisfying sort of medium. While graphite can be so delicate with its silver shimmer and refined lines, and ink so nuanced in subtle tones of black through the palest grey wash, charcoal holds the most mystery for me. And so, when my subject invokes a sense of mystery in me, its charcoal that I reach for. There are so many charcoal artists that inspire me. Art and spirit kateri ewing. I thought this was ingenious. I looked again carefully and it was clearly the letter N. What did it mean? Something to do with clouds, or a veil of pale mist? Surely there was enough of that going on in the exhibit to support that meaning. I wrote the word down in my notebook and then it was time to join the others. The workshop was beginning. Later that evening, after arriving back home, I looked it up in my dictionary. And so, an old word that I had never formally met.

The responsiveness of a metal nib full of ink is incomparable for an expressive line. My go to inks have been a watersoluable Chinese carbon ink typically used for Sumi-e, and shellac based inks in bister and black for when I want a waterproof line to use with watercolour washes.
