Bridges to London

Wednesday, May 6, 2015. War Memorial Central- west. Living, as I do, in a city that has its own Cenotaph. War memorials that remind me of London aren't exactly scarce in my experience. But I recently got a mega-dose by visiting a series of these structures in connection with an evening at the Symphony. The large center in the background of this photo is our newly renovated Tobin Center, which I've blogged about over on Hometown Tourist. Look for more views of the plaza in general at Hometown Tourist.

Bridges to London: Go! Spurs! Go! [and a book recommendation]

http://www.bridgestolondon.blogspot.com/2013/11/go-spurs-go-and-book-recommendation.html

Wednesday, November 6, 2013. And a book recommendation]. How could I not be reminded of London when I saw this football supporters' flag on the wall in my daughter's Austin home? She and her boyfriend are big fans of Tottenham Hotspur. The north London club usually referred to by a nickname familiar in another sport to folks here in South Texas. I mean, when you root for the Spurs. It's a dark and disturbing, yet wonderfully-written urban fantasy set—surprise! Plus some fantastic scenes are set in Harrod...

Bridges to London: February 2015

http://www.bridgestolondon.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 16, 2015. Walking across the University of Texas at Austin campus the other day, I happened to see a series of signs that reminded me of the various cycle-related signs. I saw in the UK:. For some reason, whenever there are a lot of bikes around, they get especially touchy about where you park them! Note the text on the sign is in burnt orange. Links to this post. Bridges to London: November 2014

http://www.bridgestolondon.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 11, 2014. I think I will always remember It comes to mind especially easily this year, since there is so much commemoration of the Great War's centenary. This amazing memorial at the Tower of London. Surely made me wish I was back there more than anything I can remember. What a wonderful, poignant, and moving tribute! I so wish I could have seen this in person. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Imperial War Museum Duxford. What brought me to Londo...

Bridges to London: A wonder of the modern world....

http://www.bridgestolondon.blogspot.com/2008/11/wonder-of-modern-world.html

Tuesday, November 18, 2008. A wonder of the modern world. It truly is a wondrous system, and we learned a lot about its history (and had several burning questions answered) by visiting the London Transport Museum. Did you know that the Thames at one time was so crowded with boat traffic, both freight and passenger, that there were frequent collisions? People either walked to work, or, later, as the city grew, took the bus. (You won't be horse-drawn in a modern London bus, but the double-. One of our most...

Bridges to London: June 2012

http://www.bridgestolondon.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 21, 2012. Two rivers, two races. I know, there's not really much similarity between the little spring-fed San Marcos River. In central Texas and the mighty Thames. But about a week and a half ago the former brought me very pleasant memories of a big event on the latter. Not quite four years ago I attended the. Then, in 2012, I went to watch my first Texas Water Safari. Away on the Gulf Coast. Zoltan at Westerfield crossing. John and Kevin after the Staples Dam portage. A bit downstream&#46...

Hometown Tourist: November 2014

http://kathyamen.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 29, 2014. GWTW: all you could ever want to know. When I was in Austin several days ago for a very. I managed to squeeze in a little time to visit the Harry Ransom Center. On the UT campus. Long-time readers will remember an earlier visit here. In 2013, but they are always mounting wonderful new exhibits and the current special one is not to be missed. The most striking items in the exhibition are the costumes (some actually restored originals) and I took the most pictures of them. ...

Hometown Tourist: Adirondack history: part 1

http://kathyamen.blogspot.com/2015/08/adirondack-history-part-1.html

Friday, August 14, 2015. Adirondack history: part 1. Upstate New York isn't just rich in scenery. Lots of important history happened up here, too. And besides, just ordinary life in the area has been pretty interesting through the years as well. One of the best places to learn about this everyday life history is the Adirondack Museum. Near Blue Mountain Lake. I showed you this museum's scenic setting in my last post. So now it's time to explore some of its history exhibits. The wetlands up here are used ...

Hometown Tourist: August 2015

http://kathyamen.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 31, 2015. I've already mentioned how many lakes dot the Adirondacks, and there are lots of neat little towns, too. Saranac Lake, where we spent a few days, deserves a special shout-out. I've already extolled the Adirondack scenery. Though, and I want to show you more of the town this time. First, here are a couple of closer looks at Lake Flower and some of the fabulous vacation homes that line it:. The lake view from our motel's dock. Not even an Adirondack chair. Links to this post. Hometown Tourist: March 2015

http://kathyamen.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 27, 2015. Some modest rains last week were nonetheless enough to make the Guadalupe River paddle-able. So we headed to our favorite stretch (Zoeller Lane-Sisterdale) last Sunday*. The cypress trees are just beginning to leaf out, but the birds were in full-throated song. Plus gorgeous, but not-yet-hot weather, and we were in our own little heaven. I didn't notice the really cool contrasting cloud types until I downloaded this snap of the Zoeller Lane bridge. Links to this post. If you're fr...

Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Wordless Wednesday: Bumper Crop. Links to this post. Friday, April 24, 2015. Little trip to the big city. Last weekend I visited my old home town and had a great time seeing old and new college friends. A group of women more or less my age holds these informal reunions every year and I finally was able to attend one. Since most of the weekend was spent with a bunch of old ladies in rooms chatting, sipping wine and eating cookies, I didn't get many pictures to share. Here's a co...

Hometown Tourist: December 2014

http://kathyamen.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Wordless Wednesday: first trip to LB*! A family favorite since before her Dad was born! Links to this post. Saturday, December 20, 2014. On a visit up I-35 last week we braved the crowds to see Austin's famous Christmas tree in Zilker Park ( there's even a song about it. But then everything in Austin is of course super-cool). There are smaller-scale, and quite lovely, Christmas cheer elsewhere in town, too. Like on Sally's front door. Links to this post. Links to this post.

Bridges To Life - Emmanuel Days. February 12, 2007. First grandson born in Portugal. In one sense, this was perfect timing, at least for pappaw.
