The Bug Spot

Monday, July 16, 2007. Wednesday, June 13, 2007. This is an annual cicada shell. It's hard to tell since it's kinda under the leaf but you can tell that this shell is much larger and more bulky than the others which tells me it was an annual cicada. So the annual cicadas started emerging a little earlier than they usually do but then I have moved farther south so they probably emerge early every year here. Here is a nice close up of an annual cicada shell. These are the ones that are just everywhere....

The Bug Spot: March 2007

http://bugpics-isaac.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 29, 2007. The paper wasps have become a lot more common and I've been noticing more making new nests on the front porch. First I'm going to start with crane flies. This is the same one that I posted making a nest in the last entry. The nest has grown a little and here are some pictures of the wasp building new cells and tending to her eggs and larvae. They build new cells by chewing up wood fiber into a pulp and adding it on to the nest. Wasps defend their nests and will not hesitate to s...

The Bug Spot: January 2007

http://bugpics-isaac.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 27, 2007. Pink toe tarantulas spend most of their time sitting on the side of the tank. They almost never go down to the bottom of the tank and will readily climb out if you open the lid. They are very curious spiders and will spend hours exploring their new enclosure. They are very fun to watch with their little pink toes and make very good pets. Sunday, January 21, 2007. Winter is still holding on tight. Here is a camel cricket. Monday, January 15, 2007. More Cold Rainy Days. This is ...

The Bug Spot: February 2007

http://bugpics-isaac.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 23, 2007. Spring is in the air! As usual I usually start with the spiders. I found this one running across a large board laying in the yard. It's a miracle I got this great picture of him. It was so tiny and running so fast I nearly lost it under the leaves. I managed to get a good focus on it and snap this picture before it took off running and disappeared in the leaves. I think this is a wolf spider. I'm not entirely sure. This is a small moth. Moths are always common flying around...

The Bug Spot: April 2007

http://bugpics-isaac.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 15, 2007. Here is an update on my tarantulas. My goliath bird eater has molted for the third time and getting huge! Here is the shed skin of my goliath bird eater. Here you can see all three shed skins from the very first molt which is obviously the smallest one. You can also see a large hissing cockroach I have preserved. Here is the shed skin on my hand for a size comparison. Here is the spider itself shortly after it molted. Here it is next to my hand. Here is a nice close up. Here is my...

From the 1990s. We live next to a small lake. And most of our yard is not landscaped. Here's one of our little neighbors: an Eastern Bark Centipede. Many more photos are listed under the clickable options in the sidebar. I organize my photos of insects according to their class, order, or family. Please use the side bar options under 'Insects' to navigate to these different groups. The posted insect orders are:. Diptera: true flies (incl. gnats and mosquitoes). Hymenoptera: sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants.
