Sawtooth Boat Works: August 2009
http://sawtoothboatworks.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 25, 2009. First shot of the interior with the frames still attached. After attaching the last two planks (sheer planks), we went to work fitting the outer stem and keel. Quite a bit of time was spent getting everything just right. An extra keel support piece was added where the keel meets the transom because the boat's keel will rest on a roller when not in use and the front of the boat will rest on a cradle. Row, row, row your boat.life is but a dream. Sunday, August 2, 2009. Building a ...

Sawtooth Boat Works: Prepping the Hull for Fiberglassing
http://sawtoothboatworks.blogspot.com/2011/04/prepping-hull-for-fiber-glassing.html
Saturday, April 16, 2011. Prepping the Hull for Fiberglassing. After planing the outer stems into shape, many hours are spent preparing the hull for fiberglassing. At the beginning of this stage, the hull is a series of edge glued rectangular planks and is fairly rough. The goal is to transform the hull, with all of its hard edges, into a smoothly curved, free flowing shape. Labels: fairing the curve. Marie and Tom Shirley. View my complete profile. Wood and Canvas Canoe Restoration: November 2009
http://sawtoothboatworks-canoerestoration.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 1, 2009. Our goal was to refurbish the canoe without losing the hard-earned patina that it had developed over the last 46 years. The hull of the canoe has its share of bumps and bruises and each one tells a story. The antique wooden canoe is beautiful in itself, but it is the patina that truly gives it character. Wood and Canvas Canoe Restoration: Stripping and Sanding
http://sawtoothboatworks-canoerestoration.blogspot.com/2010/03/stripping-and-sanding.html
Sunday, March 14, 2010. When we took on this project, I had envisioned doing a light but thorough sanding of the interior followed by two or three coats of varnish. After sanding a little, I realized that the original varnish was no longer in tact in the area around each of the approximately 1,000 plank/rib clench nails. To assure lasting protection and integrity, it was decided that all of the old varnish would need to be removed. The keel bolts (screws) were very corroded and the wood around them had d...

Monday, October 26, 2009. 1964 "Fifty Pound" Old Town Canoe. When we delivered the Penobscot 14 Whitehall style boat to John and Nancy, John asked if Sawtooth Boat Works would be interested in rebuilding an old wood and canvas canoe that had been hanging in their garage for many years. Even though this was to be new territory for us, we gladly accepted the chance to work on one of these beautiful classic canoes. Source: http:/ www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html. Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Before stretching the canvas, we had to build two clamps that would hold each end of the folded canvas. These clamps were hung from the ceiling about 17 feet from each other. One of the clamps was connected to a stud in the wall with a chain. The opposite end was connected to a wall with a come-a-long. Posted by Sawtooth Boat Works.
