Safe Harbour: Day 60: Craig to Barrier Islands
http://www.samlandsman.com/2014/08/day-60-craig-to-barrier-islands.html
Friday, August 15, 2014. Day 60: Craig to Barrier Islands. Erik flew out this morning (actually got driven to Hollis, on the other side of PoW Island, since it was too foggy to fly into Craig). I left soon after. I was happy to have the bow thruster. I kicked the stern out, used the thruster to rotate the bow 90 degrees, and motored out. View from the Barrier Islands. Note the rainbow. Tomorrow I’ll head to Prince Rupert. Subscribe to: Post Comments ( Atom ). Living aboard and wandering the Pacific North...

Safe Harbour: Circumnavigating Vancouver Island
http://www.samlandsman.com/2013/04/circumnavigating-vancouver-island.html
Tuesday, April 9, 2013. Circumnavigating Vancouver Island is no small feat. While the distance of roughly 750 nautical miles (without side trips) isn’t terribly impressive, the weather challenges are considerable. This Google Earth screenshot crudely shows my anticipated route. Subscribe to: Post Comments ( Atom ). Living aboard and wandering the Pacific Northwest. View my complete profile. Safe Harbour: Day 61: Barrier Islands to Prince Rupert
http://www.samlandsman.com/2014/08/day-61-barrier-islands-to-prince-rupert.html
Friday, August 15, 2014. Day 61: Barrier Islands to Prince Rupert. I expected to wake to fog this morning (as predicted), but instead found sunny skies. After a quick breakfast I pulled the anchor around 4:30, worked my way out of the Broken Islands, and headed into Dixon Entrance. Fog in the distance. Porpoise and calm water. A humpback waves goodbye. I cleared customs by phone as I approached Prince Rupert. Easy. It’s just frustrating that even with Nexus I have to go into Prince Rupert w...The trip do...

Safe Harbour: Day 66: Rock Inlet to Goose Bay
http://www.samlandsman.com/2014/08/day-66-rock-inlet-to-goose-bay.html
Friday, August 15, 2014. Day 66: Rock Inlet to Goose Bay. First stop today is Dawsons Landing in Rivers Inlet. Rob and Nola are the owners, and take good care of the place. They have lots of moorage, a fuel dock, and a very well stocked store. Dozens of dolphins in Fitz Hugh Sound. Then I headed for Goose Bay, home to Duncanby Landing and Goose Bay Cannery. Duncanby is a high end place…shore power (30 amp) is $45 per night, moorage is $1.75 per foot, and laundry is $20. Goose Bay Cannery's Lido Deck.

Click on this or any image in the blog for a larger view. Saturday September 18 1000 hours. We wake up to another sunny day in paradise. Who’s that coming into the basin? It's a highly modified TomCat 6.2 sailing catamaran but unrelated, except by name, to our own TomCat 24. Catamaran means At Last! Has two hu...

Safe Harbour: iPad for Marine Navigation
http://www.samlandsman.com/2011/11/ipad-for-marine-navigation.html
Saturday, November 26, 2011. IPad for Marine Navigation. I recently bought an iPad with the idea of using it as a planning tool and backup chartplotter on my trip to Alaska next summer. I tested it out yesterday and it works great, with a few exceptions. IPad mounted on the electronics shelf. I have several different charting apps installed on the iPad. My favorite is iNavX ($50), which is actually quite powerful. I have both NOAA raster charts (free! All of these apps also run on my iPhone. The internal...

Safe Harbour: February 2014
http://www.samlandsman.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 10, 2014. New Boat, New Home. I bought the boat! The transaction closed on October 30th and I moved aboard on October 31st. Until mid-January, the boat was in Skyline Marina in Anacortes. While there, I spent as much time as I could cruising in the San Juans. Just before the boat show I brought the boat to Seattle. I'll be in Seattle for the next month or two. If you're interested. More information can be found here. Below are some pictures from my first few months aboard. With all the s...
