the hinata diaries: March 2006

Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Dark chocolate slice with masala figs. Every now and then, a little milestone passes that makes me feel a wee bit more grown up in the kitchen. First meal where no-one got sick. (Fortunately I think I managed to get pass this quite a few years ago. The human stomach is an amazingly strong organ.). First meal prepared and served on time. (I'm still working on this one). Developing the discipline to wash up as I cook, thereby not leaving a mountain of mess in the sink. Monsieur H...

Tuesday, February 28, 2006. We interrupt this program to bring you this news development. I've just been informed by Philippe that as my cream puffs did not contain ice cream and were not topped with chocolate sauce, that they were not in fact profiteroles but. Choux a la creme. Which is fine with me since that sounds pretty good anyway. Except that mine are really. Choux a la "damn tasty and a lot of hard work went into this! Posted by hinata at 9:51 AM. Sunday, January 14, 2007. Christmas flog exchange meet-up. Once again, a very belated post. Excuses this time: business trips (the usual, except for a first trip to freezing cold and miserable Wuhan) and also my beloved Casio Exilim has suicided *moment of silence*. This is why I am a mere food blogger and not a Google billionaire. Anyway, here are pics from our Christmas flog exchange get-together! My wishee, Brenda. As for my wish of Japanese mochi desserts, Leroy brought a box from Minamoto Kitchoan i...

the hinata diaries: May 2006

Wednesday, May 31, 2006. We moved into our new home in February and have been infatuated with it since. Didn't matter if some odds and ends (or an entire floor) hadn't been completed, didn't matter if boxes remained to be unpacked, didn't matter if a layer of potentially carcinogenic sawdust blanketed the rooms - we'd waited a year to move in and we were entertaining at home, dammit! I shudder to think how annoying we'll be when we have a kid. I like this place already. For starters, we had cod fish cake...

the hinata diaries: July 2006

Wednesday, July 12, 2006. Celebrated Philippe's birthday on Tuesday at Nogawa. At Sentosa Golf Club. I guess when most people think of dining at Sentosa Golf Club nowadays, Il Lido. Is the first and probably only place that comes to mind. Philippe Starck decor. Garibaldi pedigree. much treasured haunt of apparently every minister and tai tai in town. Sadly though, a trip to Il Lido seems more about having your hair up and your nails done than actually enjoying the food. Our favourite Japanese restaurant ...

the hinata diaries: June 2006

Friday, June 23, 2006. The joy of food. As food bloggers, we spend inordinate amounts of time scouting out newest dining places, experimenting with exotic ingredients and attempting to master that intimidating celebrity chef recipe. Let's never forget, though, how much the pleasure of eating is derived from the company around us, dear friends and loved ones whose smiles, jokes and friendship add more flavour and joy to eating than anything we can create. G - we miss you. Posted by hinata at 8:57 PM.

Friday, December 30, 2005. Mushroom tart and chocolate pots. What I understand to be the most popular French food blog. Author Pascale has a beautiful blog with heaps of charming photos and recipes and, bonus for me, it's all in French! Well, bonus because I really do need to improve my French, and what better way than to practise it while reading about food glorious food, but headache in another regard (this will be obvious later). Serves 2 not-so-hungry people. 1-2 cloves garlic, finely chopped. Top ta...

Monday, August 28, 2006. Loads of trip updating to do, but first things first. thanks to everyone who made last Friday's food bloggers' dinner at. So fabulous and fun! Or so we called it a food bloggers' dinner. The other guests at Sage may have guessed differently, possibly surmising that our gathering was in fact a support group for People Who Cannot Eat Without First Photographing Their Food Under Various Lighting Combinations And From Several Different Angles. Such a gorgeous lot we are) at. Fricasse...

the hinata diaries: November 2005

Friday, November 04, 2005. So here we go, my first blog! Will upload some pictures as well once I figure out how to do so. Classified in the Staub catalogue under the very romantic-sounding heading 'Chef's Piano'. This is no mere 'Pieces de service' (the classification for smaller cocottes), no, this is an instrument that creates fantasies! Deep breath. calmer now). So there we go, an introduction to my new cocotte, and hopefully the start of many culinary adventures! Posted by hinata at 10:25 AM. Diary ...
