Circling Squares: 'An Ecomodernist Manifesto' reviewed—part 3
http://circlingsquares.blogspot.com/2015/04/an-ecomodernist-manifesto-reviewedpart-3.html
In which I form strong opinions about things I don't know enough about. Sunday, 26 April 2015. An Ecomodernist Manifesto' reviewed—part 3. The third part of my review of the Ecomodernist Manifesto. Was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction (although I can't say that I've changed my mind). The second. Proceeded to go through the Manifesto point by point. I'll try to continue in that vein. As such—that is, to locate the driving force behind climate change, etc. in generic, biological human capacities rat...It deri...
Circling Squares: The quiet death of the Labour Party?
http://circlingsquares.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-death-of-labour-party.html
In which I form strong opinions about things I don't know enough about. Friday, 8 May 2015. The quiet death of the Labour Party? Our progressive political parties south of Scotland, with a handful of exceptions (including in my own home constituency of Bristol West. Have manifestly failed to tap that. They've managed to take a simmering discontent and thrown a damp blanket over it. What the Tories will now knock down may never be rebuilt. That is a weight that will rest on us for generations to come.
Circling Squares: Austerity as the contested ground of future politics
http://circlingsquares.blogspot.com/2015/05/austerity-as-ground-of-future-politics.html
In which I form strong opinions about things I don't know enough about. Friday, 8 May 2015. Austerity as the contested ground of future politics. More and more I feel that austerity is going to form the principal political space of conflict not just for the coming years but for the coming decades. Its neoliberal version is only getting stronger. As ecological crises bite more and more, another version. Will cross-cut the first (with the same distribution of suffering in both cases). Labour, among other s...
Circling Squares: New materialism is the new poststructuralism
http://circlingsquares.blogspot.com/2015/04/new-materialism-is-new-poststructuralism.html
In which I form strong opinions about things I don't know enough about. Friday, 10 April 2015. New materialism is the new poststructuralism. I think that this is true in more ways than one; however, one way is particularly important. Like poststructuralism, new materialism is a signposting mechanism that allows (largely anglophone) academics to obscure the differences between (largely francophone) thinkers, mashing them into a single digestible lump. The manner in which academia satisfies itself with suc...
Circling Squares: Speaking of determinism and possibilism... (and ecomodernism)
http://circlingsquares.blogspot.com/2015/04/speaking-of-determinism-and-possibilism.html
In which I form strong opinions about things I don't know enough about. Monday, 20 April 2015. Speaking of determinism and possibilism. (and ecomodernism). Speaking of determinism and possibilism. Simon Dalby has just uploaded his paper to be presented at the AAG 2015. Annual convention in Chicago. It's titled "Framing the Anthropocene: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.". He examines, zeitgeistily enough, the ecomodernist movement. Before closing with remarks on determinism and possibilism:. Racism, multic...

Playwork, playgrounds and the anthropotechnical interface, somewhere between posthumanist geography, new materialism and feminist cyborg theory. This site is intended to be my research journal as I work towards an MPhil part-time at the University of Gloucestershire. I hope that I will use it to blog my current thinking and reading and progress. Oh, and play theory and playwork. Perhaps a little too eclectic? But then they all seem to contribute to where I want to go with this. How is children’s play med...

Ethnography as theory | Ludic Technologies

Playwork, playgrounds and the anthropotechnical interface, somewhere between posthumanist geography, new materialism and feminist cyborg theory. May 23, 2013. I’m at the University of Warwick for a seminar on ethnography as theory. His paper can be summed up in one five word phrase. Boundedness is a methodological issue. There are many subtleties within each paper that I haven’t time to write about now… time to go find the room :-). I hope to post again later with my thoughts after the event. You are com...

Circling the Baobabs
Monday, July 10, 2006. Maangi ci Amerik - I'm home. It's so green," the first words out of my mouth breathed to Israel, the Nigerian sitting next to me, as we touched down in Minneapolis. He'd watched my fidgety attempts to maintain conversation since we left JFK and smiled knowing what it's like to leave a place so different and come home after so long. Seeking the bright African tissu. And coming up with lots of pale. In the meantime, just trying to take pleasure in the small things, which is what brou...
Circling the center - Circling The Center
Nene Humphrey’s Circling the Center began as a private meditation on the loss of her husband and grew into communal art. Making with surprising connections between the neuroscience of emotions and the lost art of ritualistic Victorian Mourning Braiding. The audience participates in this communal experience of remembrance by seeing and hearing the accumulation of intricate braiding, amplified by film images, sound and live performance.
