Things I do, mostly books I read. Author Archives: Clare Parkinson. I build websites with WordPress, and custom content management tools with PHP and perl. I also enjoy various geeky pursuits, as well as gardening, baking, and running. Clare’s Spinach Chickpea Orzo Salad. Orzo about 1/2 lb or 1.5 cups. Bag of baby spinach. 1 or 2 stalks celery sliced pretty thin. Don’t use the skinny inner stalks. You want a good crunch. A pint or couple handfuls of cherry tomatoes, halved. Drain the can of chickpeas.

Things I do, mostly books I read. How I got my US T-Mobile phone to work in the UK: Samsung S4, 2013 edition. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 running Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.2). In July 2013 I took it to the UK, where I installed a UK SIM card with pay-as-you-go credit. Me and my phone. Here’s what I did. 1 Request a SIM Unlock. You won’t be able to access your email on your phone. 2 Buy and install a UK SIM card. T-Mobile is branded as EE in the UK, so find an EE store. 3 Restart your phone. Now, all you do ...

Tales from the Dirt: A Minnesota Garden. April 13, 2008 at 3:10 pm. I have a couple areas in my flower gardens that I usually fill with an annual vine; I’ve been looking around for something I haven’t tried before. Usually this ends up being some sort of odd experiment. One year I tried to germinate a Black Eyed Susan vine. Cardinal Climber is another climbing vine I tested out a few years ago. Burpee sells the seeds. But ours were much larger. The other new (to me) vine I’m trying out this year is...

Tales from the Dirt: A Minnesota Garden. April 26, 2008 at 3:31 pm. We’ve been having days alternating between too cold and wet to be outdoors, or very warm and dry. Last week I decided to lay out some chip paths in one section of the vegetable garden – this makes it easier for me to step in and move around without getting muddy, or crushing down the planting beds. Rather than planting in rows, I can plant these beds solidly and replace with new plantings throughout the summer. And these. Bluebells?

Tales from the Dirt: A Minnesota Garden. Asparagus rows and Potatoes. May 1, 2008 at 4:12 pm. I was at the nursery last night and saw the asparagus crowns in the refrigerators. Who doesn’t need more asparagus? Of course I brought home a box. They’re Jersey Giant, male plants. (The female plants send up skinny, woody stalks). The first year we’ll mulch in the fall, maybe with straw. Potatoes were the other project this morning! Here’s what they look like:. And then you cut in half, or even quarters, leavi...

Sunday, September 23, 2007. Nearly twenty years ago Wendell Berry wrote. I've cared about how the world is used for almost as long as I can remember. It's why my favorite book as a child was Be Nice to Spiders. And why my dad spent our pre-curbside pickup years shuttling me and a bunch of overflowing brown bags to the recycling center. It's why I started walking to work and why I stopped eating meat. It's also why - after devouring a little yellow tome called Plenty. Posted at 10:37 PM. Links to this post.

First spring vegetables | Tales from the Dirt: A Minnesota Garden
https://talesfromthedirt.wordpress.com/2008/05/07/first-spring-vegetables
Tales from the Dirt: A Minnesota Garden. May 7, 2008 at 11:05 pm. Today we had the first “harvest” of the season – a big bunch of asparagus. Delicious! We are mere days away from the first spring salad; I’ve already tasted some spinach and radishes. I thinned a few today and got some radishes big enough to eat; I have two plantings in, currently, and probably will do a third planting on Friday, if the weather cooperates. Blueberry update: Things are looking amazing! The stuff that looks like sawdust R...

Monday, May 14, 2007. Classroom Portrait Gallery: Exhibits A, B, and C. Several months ago, a couple students finished their work early and then used the PaintPad program on the classroom computer to create a likeness of me, which I later incorporated into my daily powerpoint presentations. Other students grew inexplicably jealous of this fame and insisted they could out-paintpad the original portrait-makers. What I don't like:. What I do like:. What I don't like:. What I do like:. Friday, August 31, 2007. A Brief Note to the Neighbors. We have a front door and it is perfectly okay to use it. There is really no need to stand in our yard and attempt to hail us through the windows, nor is it necessary to remain shouting from said yard for the duration of the conversation you've initiated. Seriously, we'd love to chat, but we paid good money for that door and we might as well get some use out of it. Posted at 1:54 PM. Links to this post. Wednesday, August 15, 2007. Posted at 1:59 PM.
Some Guy's Blog: Too Long...
http://andsomeguysblog.blogspot.com/2014/06/too-long.html
If this blog were a book, you'd read it on the toilet. Yeah, It's been a long time. First, the last post is a detailed route of the road trip my buddy, Guido, and I took over the course of several months in early 1996. I tried to recreate it as accurately as I could. Sorry to leave you hanging on that. With the news of the loss of Doc. I make no judgment on what Doc did. I hope the people who knew him best and who are in pain right now will find comfort. So sad. Thats all Im saying. Wont you play along?

Tuesday, September 04, 2007. My First Day of Not Having a First Day of School. I didn't go back to school today. For, like, the first time ever. I went from high school to college to grad school to teaching, so for pretty much as long as I can remember the day after Labor Day has been The First Day of School. A day of both nervous anticipation and new beginnings. But today was just any old day, with nothing in particular to anticipate and nary a fresh start to be made. What I don't like:. What I do like:.

The Clareverse | Things I do, mostly books I read.
Things I do, mostly books I read. Clare’s Spinach Chickpea Orzo Salad. The mixture of textures is a pretty important part of this dish. You need a good crunch and a mild oniony flavor; radishes are a good substitute for sweet onion. The celery is important, and the cherry tomatoes have to be halved. I just eyeball the ratio of ingredients, so these are approximate measurements. Orzo about 1/2 lb or 1.5 cups. Bag of baby spinach. A pint or couple handfuls of cherry tomatoes, halved. Add salt and black pep...
