Mavis of Green Hill | Redeeming Qualities

Laquo; Play the Game! Mavis of Green Hill. July 30, 2015. It’s been way too long since I posted anything, so, um…let’s see. The last book I finished was. Mavis of Green Hill. It reads like a fantasy, is the thing. Like the novel isn’t the truest or most appropriate form for the story. Because, you know, some stories. Best as novels, right? Anyway, it’s not exactly the same thing, but I found myself thinking a lot about those conventions as I read. Mavis of Green Hill. Then: tropes, all of them! Late 19th...

The Rain-Girl | Redeeming Qualities
https://redeemingqualities.wordpress.com/2015/08/06/the-rain-girl
Laquo; Mavis of Green Hill. August 6, 2015. So, I should have written about Herbert George Jenkins’. A couple of weeks ago, when I read it. I looked it up after Tasha gave it a good review. On The Project Gutenberg Project because I obviously like Jenkins (actually I haven’t written about him much, have I? And here’s the thing: by the time the book ended, I was rooting for them. I was even charmed. And I don’t remember why. All I’ve retained is my completely justifiable lack...I really liked Patricia Bre...

Evelina’s Garden | Redeeming Qualities
https://redeemingqualities.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/evelinas-garden
Laquo; The Rain-Girl. August 10, 2015. I don’t know how I feel about. By Mary Wilkins Freeman. It feels so self-consciously quaint and historical, and no one has a personality. There’s this girl, and she likes this guy, but she’s too shy or proud ot something to admit it, so she becomes a recluse whose only interest is her garden, and he reluctantly marries someone else but remains secretly devoted to Evelina. I guess I actually know exactly how I feel about. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. The Project Guten...

The Lone Wolf | Redeeming Qualities
https://redeemingqualities.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/the-lone-wolf
Laquo; The Enchanted April. The Rustle of Silk. July 23, 2010. I was predisposed to like Louis Joseph Vance because he was found dead in his apartment in December 1933, burnt to a crisp from the waist up. Apparently there were suspicions that he’d just…gone up in flames one day, and spontaneous human combustion is, like, my. Thing Or, at least, I find the idea of it pretty entertaining. But I think I would like Louis Vance even if he hadn’t spontaneously combusted. Take Lanyard, for instance. He does...

Consumed by Despair | Fischer On Comix
https://fischeroncomix.wordpress.com/2012/03/25/consumed-by-despair
Just another WordPress.com site. March 25, 2012. What’s my favorite website or blog? Given that the Interweb offers up an almost infinite cornucopia of weird-ass information put up by weird-ass people, that’s a tough decision. I have my more-than-once-a-day visits to the. But alt-comix obsessives already know about these. I also frequently check the sites of individual creators whose work I like (like my pal Ben Towle’s blog. So I knew he was smart, irreverent and funny, and his two blogs are likewise so.

Linda Lee, Incorporated | Redeeming Qualities
https://redeemingqualities.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/linda-lee-incorporated
Linda Lee, Incorporated. June 9, 2015. Sometime I’d like to read a book set in the silent film industry that’s not full of drug addiction and divorce and debt, and. Linda Lee, Incorporated. Definitely isn’t it. But it does have a wealth of detail about how movies got made circa 1922, and it doesn’t take too many offensive moral stances on its characters’ behavior, so I’ll take it. It also doesn’t have much in common with. Oh please—write the book yourself—about one. Or both of the camera men! I’ve ...

Laquo; Linda Lee, Incorporated. Mavis of Green Hill. June 17, 2015. I’ve been having a really hard time writing about. By Ruth Comfort Mitchell, and I don’t know why. I liked it but I didn’t love it. It wasn’t what I expected. And that’s the way I feel about a lot of books that I have no trouble writing about. It sounds to me like the characters weren’t developed beyond stereotypes.
