Monday, 23 February 2015. Douarnenez and the 'Two Islands'. When I was researching the origin of the name Douarnenez I was particularly interested in whether it might be derived from the Breton: daou. 8216;two’ [in Welsh: dau/dwy. And Breton: (an) enez. 8216;(the) island’ [Welsh: ynys. Can be found in the names Anglesey/Ynys Mon, the Isle of Bardsey/Ynys Enlli, Enniskillen (N. Ireland) and Inchmarnock (Scotland). Two' element was pushing it a bit, but conceivably we could view the peninsula (. Cause more...

QUIMPER-VANNES: April 2014

Wednesday, 30 April 2014. The Zh in Breizh, Brezhoneg and Breton Place Names. Something that always puzzled me about Breton was this 'z/zh'. It is obviously a sound shift which features only in modern Breton (not Old Breton - the one we need to use for place names), but where does it come from? The 'zh' spelling was introduced in 1941 to merge the representation of different dialect sounds: it represents /h/ in Vannetais and /js/ in the Tré. Gorrois, Cornouallais amd L. Which can be found in Old Breton.
