QUIMPER-VANNES: Douarnenez and the 'Two Islands'

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2015/02/its-strange-urge-within-us-that-compels.html

Monday, 23 February 2015. Douarnenez and the 'Two Islands'. When I was researching the origin of the name Douarnenez I was particularly interested in whether it might be derived from the Breton: daou. 8216;two’ [in Welsh: dau/dwy. And Breton: (an) enez. 8216;(the) island’ [Welsh: ynys. Can be found in the names Anglesey/Ynys Mon, the Isle of Bardsey/Ynys Enlli, Enniskillen (N. Ireland) and Inchmarnock (Scotland). Two' element was pushing it a bit, but conceivably we could view the peninsula (. Cause more...

QUIMPER-VANNES: How did Saint Noyal lose her head?

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2015/04/how-did-saint-noyal-lose-her-head.html

Tuesday, 7 April 2015. How did Saint Noyal lose her head? In Brittany there are a series of communes which carry the name Noyal: Noyal Pontivy (Morbihan);. Ille-et-Vilaine); and Noyal (Cotes d'Armor). Most French and Breton writers assume the name is connected with the Gaulish:. 8216;wetland’, 'marsh' [Old French: noue. Examples elsewhere in France include Nods (Franche-Comté), Noé (Midi-Pyrénées) and Les Noës (Aube). A further group derive the name from Gaulish: novio. New' and Gaulish: ialo. She settle...

QUIMPER-VANNES: The legend of Saint Gwen of Brittany and Dorset

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2015/01/saint-gwen-of-brittany-and-dorset.html

Saturday, 10 January 2015. The legend of Saint Gwen of Brittany and Dorset. The church of Whitchurch-Canonicorum in Dorset is dedicated to Saint-Candida (a.k.a Saint-Wite). Below the east window there is an altar tomb with. Three openings which allowed devotees to reach inside the shrine in the hope of a miraculous cure for whatever ailed them. On the top of this there used to be a 14th century coffin built into a slab of local marble. Here lie the relics of Saint Wite. But who did bones belong to? Her n...

Wednesday, 23 April 2014. Uhel, Huel and Uzel. There are a cluster of place names with Celtic roots which all mean 'high', 'above' or 'over'. In Welsh there is:. Upper', 'highest' [Felin-gwm-uchaf, Cwm Twrch Uchaf]. High' [Bonuchel, Gelli-Bonuchel]. Above', 'over' [Llanuwchllyn, Uwchmynydd]. High' [Uzel, Huelgoat, Canihuel, Gurunhuel]. QUIMPER-VANNES: May 2014

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Friday, 23 May 2014. Did Asterix live in Erquy? The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not enitrely. One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. The evidence is quite straightforward:. 1 The coastline pictured in the map under the magnifying glass at the front of the Asterix books matches Erquy's position nicely. On Google's map of Erquy. Worked for a year in Brittany as a teenager. 4 Erquy has ancient granite rose. QED (quite easily done).

QUIMPER-VANNES: April 2014

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 30 April 2014. The Zh in Breizh, Brezhoneg and Breton Place Names. Something that always puzzled me about Breton was this 'z/zh'. It is obviously a sound shift which features only in modern Breton (not Old Breton - the one we need to use for place names), but where does it come from? The 'zh' spelling was introduced in 1941 to merge the representation of different dialect sounds: it represents /h/ in Vannetais and /js/ in the Tré. Gorrois, Cornouallais amd L. Which can be found in Old Breton.

QUIMPER-VANNES: Why Quimper-Vannes? Why Camper Vans?

http://quimper-vannes.blogspot.com/2014/04/why-quimper-vannes-why-camper-vans.html

Wednesday, 2 April 2014. Quimper and Vannes are, of course, two of the oldest and largest cities of Old Brittany, along with Rennes, Saint Brieuc, Brest and Nantes (now in Loire Atlantique). Their Breton names are Kemper. In French the names are pronounced. Not unlike the English 'camper van'. I could have chosen Quemperven. Which has it all in one. But the pronunciation, unfortunately,. Is a bit off. In 2012 I published. Colombo Jumbo: The Origin of Colombo Street Names. Posted by Geoff Ells. The ermine...

Searching for the Best

Searching for the Best. Saturday, 15 November 2014. It's official - I LOVE autumn! Carving pumpkins for Halloween and enjoying fabulous firework displays on Bonfire Night. Really, who couldn't. Blogged asking what our favourite things about Autumn were, I was obviously spoiled for choice. However, my absolute. Tuesday, 14 October 2014.
