carbon-based curiosities: A Mighty Inorganic Kablooie
http://coronene.blogspot.com/2007/10/mighty-inorganic-kablooie.html
A Mighty Inorganic Kablooie. You couldn't pay me enough money to work with polyazides. That's pretty much the bottom line for me. For some reason, though, these potential molecular bombs have attracted a lot of interest lately. The total synthesis of tetraazidomethane. Was finally completed earlier this year. And the synthesis of the complex Ti[N. Among other metal-polyazides, was completed a few years back. This time with selenium: the (lame) Se[N. The much more awesome Se[N. A GIANT FUCKING EXPLOSION*.
carbon-based curiosities: change of plans? (no-content post)
http://coronene.blogspot.com/2007/10/change-of-plans-no-content-post.html
Speaking of crystals, OMFG this paper is awsome:. Structure of a Thiol Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoparticle at 1.1 Å Resolution. Pablo D. Jadzinsky, Guillermo Calero, Christopher J. Ackerson, David A. Bushnell, and Roger D. Kornberg Science 19 October 2007: 430-433. The dude deserved the Nobel. Wow, impressive. I wonder why noone else thought about doing this- growing sufficiently monodisperse gold nanoparticles is very tricky but not impossible. Good stuff. This paper is great. I'd like to think th...
carbon-based curiosities: orange!! (the most exciting thing i've seen in a while)
http://coronene.blogspot.com/2007/10/orange-most-exciting-thing-ive-seen-in.html
The most exciting thing i've seen in a while). You've seen a lot of the perylene diimides I've made. (In case you missed them, here they are.) To this point, they've all looked the same- red to violet in the solid state. This one is different. It's so tangerine it hurts a little. Also, it isn't a fibrous pancake- all the others give me long, flexible needles, if. They crystallize at all (perylenes are infamous for gellating. This one actually behaves like a normal crystalline solid! Why orange, though?
carbon-based curiosities: The Future is Here
http://coronene.blogspot.com/2007/10/future-is-here.html
The Future is Here. That didn't have a very good ring to it, did it? Oh well. We're moving to our own domain! Check out the new CBC here! The Blogger blog will stay here as an archive for all these old posts, but we're going to start posting over at the new site from now on. unless we decide to move all the posts over there (read: fat chance). Awesome. This is like moving out of your parents basement. I declare October 26.Blogger CBC Memorial Day! Good i hate the blogger comment form. You should click me.
carbon-based curiosities: Friday Potpourri
http://coronene.blogspot.com/2007/10/friday-potpourri.html
Just a few things to sate your appetite for the ol' CBC this weekend:. James Watson, as it turns out, is a complete prick. Shocking. Given his treatment of Rosalind Franklin. In The Double Helix. I think this is a point worth repeating. There are some things that science can't fix. Race discrimination is undoubtedly one of those things. Epic lulz* In an incredible paper. Thanks to anonymous for the tip, whoever you are.). Another cool paper from Advanced Materials, aka that one journal with the awesome r...

The Cell Blog: Surf's Up
http://thecellblog.blogspot.com/2007/06/surfs-up.html
Looking for a good blog concerning Cell Biology? You've come to the right place. At the cell blog, it's all cells all the time. From techniques to current issues, we've got it. Wednesday, June 6, 2007. Calcium is the shit when it comes to cell messages. It interacts with a ton of things in the cell, such as allowing vesicles to fuse with the membrane in exocytosis, binding to calmodulin, binding to myofibrils in muscle contraction and lots of other really important things. I found this. ATP After doing s...
The Cell Blog: Sorry you have Diabetes, your SURs must be retarded

Looking for a good blog concerning Cell Biology? You've come to the right place. At the cell blog, it's all cells all the time. From techniques to current issues, we've got it. Monday, June 4, 2007. Sorry you have Diabetes, your SURs must be retarded. Is an article from Nature by Colin G. Nichols about Kir. An inward rectifying potassium channel that plays a huge part in the insulin secretion pathway. With everyone getting so fat. I figure this is handy knowledge for any biologist. Or to the NBFs. Of cou...

girl in chemistry: November 2007
http://chem-bomb.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 27, 2007. I've spent hours wrangling over the same topic, trying to say the same thing in five different ways so that it doesn't sound like I'm repeating myself over and over again. I think it's chemistry for me. I'm leaning in that direction. Slowly, leaving behind that biology business. Chemists are snobby, anyway. We're better than biologists, we like to think. Of course, we love the biological. But real-deal, rough-n-tumble, pull-out-your-microscopes, take-off-your-goggles biology?

Two-headed chemical mayhem!: February 2007
http://chemical-chimera.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 18, 2007. So I thought I might post something chemistry-related - something I haven't done in a while. Below are three papers I have read recently. After reading almost any of Fujita's papers, I always think to myself "wish I would have published that". His work is simple (in theory), which gives it an intangible elegance. Here ( J. Am. Chem. Soc. Another cool paper, also in the field of coordination chemistry, is a recent review by Nitschke ( Acc. Chem. Res. Anyway, the point of this wo...

Coronel Walcyr

The Leading Resource On Coronene | Coronene.com
Coronene (also known as superbenzene) is a carbon and hydrogen molecule that is made from six peri-fused benzene rings. Its chemical formula is C24H12. Coronene is yellow in color and it dissolves in solvents such as benzene, toluene, and dichloromethane. Its solutions emit blue light fluorescence under UV light. Coronene is not used for many applications, but it has been used as a solvent probe, similar to pyrene. Coronene can be used to synthesize graphene. Researchers manage to control polymorphism gr...
