Country Living in a City Home: February 2013

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 1, 2013. I want to plant stuff! Yes, I know it's barely February and this is cold country. I know it will no doubt snow again. and again. I know the nights are freezing and some of the days are, too. I still want to plant stuff. The seed catalogs have taken hold of my imagination and I daydream about watermelon and green beans and real tomatoes. Grocery stores are okay in a pinch but there's nothing like fresh, real food! Where did that tomato come from? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Country Living in a City Home: March 2014

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 6, 2014. The first one came before Christmas. I was hard pressed to not sit down right then and begin planning the garden! I always think I can plant a lot more than is possible here. If I dug up my entire back yard, I might. but not all of it gets sunlight, so maybe not. Anyway, the catalogs make me forget how it feels when I get behind in weeding, or how I worry when something is late coming up. Where will you put it? What will you plant next to it? What preparations do you need to make?

Country Living in a City Home: Hurry, get the harvest in!

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014/07/hurry-get-harvest-in.html

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Hurry, get the harvest in! And the rush is on. August means bushels of ripe tomatoes, summer squash overrunning the garden, gallons of cucumbers and peppers, and corn tasseling overnight. That is, if you're one of those gardeners who never fails! That's not me and that's probably not you. One crop or another fails now and then and we have to say, "Well, the tomatoes did well, anyway! Which way will it be? It's time to make the decisions and full speed ahead! Subscribe in a reader.

Country Living in a City Home: The Beets are Ready

http://countrylivinginacityhome.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-beets-are-ready.html

Friday, July 11, 2014. The Beets are Ready. While beets are not the first harvest, they are the first harvest that I put up for the winter, so it was a sort of kickoff to the activities the rest of the summer and fall bring. I thinned the beets and canned seven pints of them pickled. Canning beets is a job! I tried to hurry to get them done before the heat of the day, but it just didn't work that way. Anyway, here is the recipe I used for the syrup:. To each pint jar, add 1/2 teaspoon of canning salt, th...

Pat Veretto's Frugal Living Blog: Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

Pat Veretto's Frugal Living Blog. Let's tackle money issues we face every day. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket. That's a phrase usually reserved for expectations or investments, but it fits saving money, too. If you clip coupons but don't bother to shop second hand for clothing and household goods, you're spending more than you have to. If you only shop the sales rack but you compare auto insurance every 10 years or so, you're probably spending more than you have to.

Pat Veretto's Frugal Living Blog: It's time to gather tea for the winter

http://patverettosfrugalliving.blogspot.com/2015/07/its-time-to-gather-tea-for-winter.html

Pat Veretto's Frugal Living Blog. Let's tackle money issues we face every day. Sunday, July 19, 2015. It's time to gather tea for the winter. Right now is a great time to gather plants for tea (tisanes, actually) from your garden, yard or wild areas to use this winter. You probably have a few plants (aka, weeds) available that make good tea and right now, they're free for the taking. Free is frugal, right? So what can you make tea from? Dandelions (leaves and roots. Some leaves will be dry and ready to s...

Pat Veretto's Frugal Living Blog. Let's tackle money issues we face every day. Wednesday, July 15, 2015. Making money is as critical as saving it, and if you're a stay at home parent or between jobs or disabled or in any other position where you need to make money, working online is the ideal way to bring in an income. For some, that's fine. It's perfect, as a matter of fact, for some people. There are several sites where you can work to do that: the ubiquitous Swagbucks. Then there is Inboxdollars.

Don't think of them as just for the kids and school; they're for you and your home, too. Country Living in a City Home

One of the things that country living means to me is making do, or self suffiency. It all ties in with frugal living, simple living, even preparedess, but it's at heart, a hands-on type of doing for oneself by choice. What brought this on is watching the changing seasons. We are slowly turning from winter to spring. Leftover winter projects need to be finished now. Before warm weather lures us outside. In my back yard, in my pantry still offering with good food from last year's garden, from my sewing bas...
