Can we cope with information abundance? February 24, 2012 at 2:17 am. The technology we use today has totally transformed the way we learn. Gone are the days of searching through countless books for a specific piece of information; Google is much quicker. We have a world of information right at our fingertips. But the question is, do we have the necessary focus to take full advantage of this recent development? The opportunities presented by web based learning are too big to ignore, and it would be fooli...

Does bullying occur in higher education? March 23, 2012 at 6:01 pm. Unfortunately, bullies are typically seen as an unavoidable part of the school experience. Yet upon reaching higher education, all these people who spent their school years making others miserable suddenly seem to disappear. Is it simply that bullying in the traditional sense does not occur in higher education, and if not, why not? Or poor social skills. Than non-bullying and victimised students. Therefore like the earlier theory, it...

Education in America | debatesineducation

March 2, 2012 at 9:01 am. America is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts compared to America. So its unsurprising that it has the biggest research budget in the world, with 20% of the worlds research papers having American authorship. Middle school/ Junior high. The Science of Learning. Delving into the theories behind education. Outrage at the suggestion of Bangor over Cambridge! For the TES created a big stir this week in the world of teaching. In the article he talks about ambitious students needing to slow down and asked why someone should aim to go to Cambridge with 3 As and hate it or go to Bangor with 3Cs and love it? Just another WordPress.com site. Laquo; Classroom Layouts. Everyone loves a good book…? March 2, 2012. I initially thought my blog this week was going to be on the only argument in psychology that rivals the nature vs nurture debate. Which obviously is the gender difference debate over which is better? I am going to start with the worst news in my opinion, and that is that apparently on average 1 in 11 boys leave primary school not being read. It also mentions in the article that in some areas of the...

Hope Chester's Blog. The Science of Education. The private benefit for the individual seems to be the most popular argument for education, the individual that is educated will typically earn more than their uneducated peer (Ashenfelter and Rouse, 1998). Okay firstly I did say I was going to do a blog on social enterprise and how it could be applied to HE, however I found a more interesting topic, so that has been put back a week! Extending compulsory education? Is it necessary? | elburns

February 9, 2012. It appears I am behind the educational times, but when sat in a talk I discovered that the school leaving age was 18. Quite frankly (although I’m sure many will disagree with me) initially I was appalled. I began thinking clearly it is not correct for everyone to follow the academic route. However when I began looking at some statistics it appeared to me that just under 40%. Of individuals in the UK graduate from university with a degree, with only on average a 6%. Shows that lifetime w...

Whilst researching for last week’s Blog regarding Mental Health Issues affecting children’s academic success. I was surprised by how much research was available, and by how many children were affected by these issues, and decided I would like to carry the topic over to this week’s Blog. 1993), research showed that depression is not something that a child grows out of and can ca...

This has been one of my favourite modules from the whole time I have been here. Reasons for this include:. 1 We were given the opportunity to be truly independent learners. We had to choose our own topics, arguments and sources to back these up. This is something I feel is missing from many curriculums, both at secondary and tertiary education levels. While some people will benefit more from a structured approach than others, too much structure be restricting and discouraging. April 20, 2012 at 3:53 pm.
