On Bicycles, and.... what else is there?

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Monday, January 25, 2016. Proposed update to the 1-second gap rule: 3-second gap. It's been a long time since I've done a post here, mainly because I've been working from home a lot, and the loss of my mind-numbing Caltrain commute means loss of blogging time. But I'm compelled to break the silence, at least briefly, to propose a change to the UCI cycling rules. Here's a video of the final km of stage 4 of the Tour Down Under this year. At some point, though, a gap m...

On Bicycles, and.... what else is there?: March 2015

http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Pro cycling victories: is the early season predictive? The most excellent Inner Ring blog recently posted statistics on World Tour and Pro Continental professional cycling wins so far in 2015: the link is here. These numbers have come into focus due to Tinkoff-Saxo's owner, Alexei Tinkoff, sacking long-time team manager Bjarne Riis. Bjarne has been managing the team, and its predecessors, since it was founded as Team CSC in 2000. On March 2nd...

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Monday, September 29, 2014. Some climbs in Switzerland and France. Here's some climbs I've done the past few weeks in Switzerland and France, having been in Basil in part for work. The profile and smoothed grade are here:. The climb as shown in tje profile gains 292 meters over 5.45 km, an average grade of 5.3%. Here's the profile to the summit sign:. The next climb I just call "Hauptstrasse - Weissenstein" since I don't know it's proper name. The Strava segment ...

On Bicycles, and.... what else is there?: Garmin Edge 25: simpler, lighter, smaller equals better

http://djconnel.blogspot.com/2015/06/garmin-edge-25.html

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Garmin Edge 25: simpler, lighter, smaller equals better. Has a "hands-on" (as opposed to an "in-depth" review; still way more in-depth than any other reviews on the web) of the new Garmin Edge 20 and 25. These are,. Garmin addressing the simpler/lighter-is-better market for GPS. So I was surprised when I saw these new units, which come it at half the weight of the already light (57 gram) Edge 500. There had to be a catch. So give me a compac...

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Friday, June 5, 2015. 2016 Trek Madone 9. First I saw it on the UCI list of approved frames for June. Then I saw a teaser video posted to the Trek website. And then this uncredited photo was posted to the Weight Weenies forum:. My that looks fast. Maybe it's the color, but it reminds me of the Canyon Aerooad. The Canyon has done rather well in the tunnel, not in the class of the Cervélo S5, but fairly good. See for example Tour magazine data here. Is the Scott F02&#4...

On Bicycles, and. what else is there? Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Low-Key hits the dirt, part 4: Marin Headlands. Love-hate: my relationship with a mountain bike and Low-Key Hillclimbs. So to spice things up, we needed to add something more truly different. In 1998, a flat time trial was on the series. I don't take credit for this one: it was a year I was relatively uninvolved. But the route, Willow Springs, was rained out. So it never got used. My contribution was the dirt. Dirt adds an entirely dif...

Friday, July 29, 2011. Had the pleasure today of getting out for the "Apple Friday Lunch Ride". Nice ride with 6 of us, Magdalena, Stonebrook, Elena. I should ride Elena NB more, a good place to work on your descents without going way up the mountain. I really need to find a time to go ahead and try to do a fast OLH. Wednesday, July 20, 2011. CDS-0: A minimal bike geometry

http://cds-0.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-minimal-bike-geometry.html

Friday, November 29, 2013. A minimal bike geometry. With this post I want to start a project that I've got in my mind for quite a long time. I've got a very busy year ahead so I don't know if I will be advancing as fast as I would like to. As a first step, I want to define a minimal set of parameters that could determine completely the dynamic behaviour of a bike. Let's take a look to a typical bike geometry chart:. Specialized Venge 2014 geometry chart. Taking all this into account, we can say that a mi...

CDS-0: Trek and Specialized investigate on bicycle dynamics

http://cds-0.blogspot.com/2013/12/trek-and-specialized-investigate-on.html

Wednesday, December 25, 2013. Trek and Specialized investigate on bicycle dynamics. After the optimisation work that the F1 chassis builder did for the carbon layup of the Venge McLaren, McLaren and Specialized continue to cooperate. This time, McLaren is focusing on studying the dynamic behaviour of bikes and analyzing how it can be improved tuning the mechanical characteristics of the frame. Bikeradar has the full story. As the McLaren engineer says, both vertical (through the relation between Crr and ...

CDS-0: February 2013

http://cds-0.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 19, 2013. Just a short post to show the tire-road contact model that I will use for the dynamical model of a bicycle that I'm developping. The model is fully "analytical", no multi-body software used. There are some secundary features lacking but the core is already done. As you can see just after the impact, this road profile-wheel combination is near the limit of the single contact point condition that the majority of tire load models use. Some plots:. CDS-0: Dynamical model. Introduction

http://cds-0.blogspot.com/2013/09/dynamical-model-introduction.html

Thursday, September 12, 2013. Dynamical model. Introduction. After those two simpler models, I decided to devote more time to the development of the dynamical model. It started with a tire model able to handle discontinuous contact. Later, I tried to build the whole system around this tire model without success so I decided to step back and add elements to the model progressively. A quick animation. Take a look at how the BB and the chain moves during the downstroke ;). More soon. Thanks for reading!

Friday, March 23, 2012. The return of the legend. After the latest regulation craze of the UCI, it's nice to hear these words:. Saturday, March 17, 2012. Rim and disc brakes. Rear end vertical stiffness. To simplificate things, I have considered the rear end to be plane and formed by two identical tubes. I have also applied linearity (small strain) in the system to avoid having also to consider inertial and slipping forces due to deceleration. If something isn't clear, don't hesitate to ask. Rim and disc...

Thursday, June 20, 2013. Long time without posting because I was very busy the last few months. Now I've got some free time and I will try to complete the dynamical model. Right now, I am developping accurate pedal force profiles for variable cadence and/or power and a tuneable automatic drivetrain (something similar to the SRAM Automix IGH). The upper body and the elastic couplings between the rider and the bike aren't modelised yet but I will add them later. More soon. Thanks for reading!
