Life in the Land of Wa

One family's adventures in Japan and everywhere in between. Back to Bunny Island. April 29th was the first holiday in a string of public holidays that make up Golden Week in Japan. We decided to take advantage of the good weather and make a return trip to Ō. Kunoshima to feed the bunnies, picnic, and play at the beach. The Oshimas came along with us to the island. It was their first time to visit, which is interesting considering it is only a little over an hour away from Fukuyama. Monday, May 04, 2015.

Life in the Land of Wa: Another Year Older

http://www.dustinandlaura.blogspot.com/2015/01/another-year-older.html

One family's adventures in Japan and everywhere in between. The changing of the year is always a super busy time around our house. Christmas, Dustin's birthday, New Year's, and Theo's birthday all fall back to back and make for a joyful and hectic time. On December 30th, Dustin turned 35. In recent years he has become a little bit more balanced and accepting of his age and this year I didn't hear even a hint of, "I'm getting soooo old! What have I even done with my life? It was a nice change. Theo on his...

Life in the Land of Wa: Wild Boar Lard

http://www.dustinandlaura.blogspot.com/2015/01/wild-boar-lard.html

One family's adventures in Japan and everywhere in between. About two years ago we were fortunate enough to find a source of wild boar meat. They are a big nuisance in Japan, causing all kinds of damage to crops and properties and occasionally attacking people. Populations of wild boar can be very high in rural areas, so the government encourages farmers to trap and kill boars to reduce their numbers. First I trimmed the fat from the meat which left me with about 1 kilo of fat. I popped the nabe with no ...

Life in the Land of Wa: Hatsumōde

http://www.dustinandlaura.blogspot.com/2015/01/hatsumode.html

One family's adventures in Japan and everywhere in between. On one of the first days in the new year people in Japan traditionally go to a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple to pray, buy good luck charms for the next year, and burn the good luck charms they bought the year before. This visit is called hatsum ō. On our way up the hillside. The boys helped the men with their fire for half an hour or so and then we headed back down the hill. Later in that day, our neighbour brought by a branch of nanten.

Grown in Japan: January 2013

http://japanborn.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 25, 2013. Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice. Just a short update: I had my 20 week appointment and ultrasound today and found out officially that we have a healthy baby girl! Theo didn't seem surprised at all since he told me that it was a girl from the very beginning. He also told me that William was going to be a boy from day one so maybe the kid has a knack. Here is the one token photo that they gave me today showing a profile of her face and chest. Friday, January 18, 2013. This wee...

Grown in Japan: My Flesh and Blood

http://japanborn.blogspot.com/2013/02/my-flesh-and-blood.html

Friday, March 1, 2013. My Flesh and Blood. My blood type was not news to me by any means, since I donated blood regularly while a student in university. Mostly because, though not insanely rare, my blood type is only shared by 3% of Canadians and can be donated to anyone with A or AB /- blood (sorry all you O's and B's, you're out of luck). For both of my previous pregnancies I received a shot. The creepiest part of this drawing are the little Pacmans. Eating away at the sign. My Flesh and Blood.

BlackKitty's Korner...: October 2013

Where I talk about being a mother, knitting, Japan, being part of the JET Program, books, movies, and my life in general. Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Lately I've been on a personal finance kick. I'm on my third finance book, with many more on my wish list at Audible. This fascination started a few years ago, when, in an effort to make sure I'll be ready to handle my own income, I picked up a book called "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit Sethi. About saving money, but I wanted to know more. It also mad...

Grown in Japan: Trust Issues

http://japanborn.blogspot.com/2013/04/trust-issues.html

Thursday, April 25, 2013. My first encounter with this was the extremely quick ultrasounds. Submission has never been one of my strong points, but it turned out that adopting this attitude helped me tremendously during labour and delivery where Dustin and I had no idea what was going on pretty much the whole time and had no input whatsoever. I will most definitely be writing about the birth in greater detail in the future. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Gaijin Housewife in Japan. Back to Bunny Island.

Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The boys are absolutely thrilled to have a little sister and baby in the house. Theo assumed the role of protective and doting big brother right away. William surprisingly doesn't seem too bummed out that he is no longer the baby but has been shifted to middle child status. He isn't as interested in her as Theo, but always gives a token "aaaaawwwwww! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Gaijin Housewife in Japan. Ikebana with kids: A fun summer holiday activity. Grown in Japan: November 2013

http://japanborn.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 2, 2013. Recovery and Post Partum. Dustin, right before being unceremoniously kicked. Out of my room for the night. The next morning, at 6 am, the midwife came back into my room. How could her shift possibly be this long? Maybe she went home for a few hours and came back for the morning shift? It was a horrifying thought. This woman was immovably rigid and unyielding in her out-dated and counterproductive polices and there was no way Rosie and I could survive a week in her care.

Sunday, March 31, 2013. Prenatal Ultrasounds in Japan. Even though this condition is not known to be genetic, it is impossible to not be eternally edgy after you have a child born with any kind of congenital condition. End of pregnancy rant for now. Thursday, March 21, 2013. The Personal Side of Pregnancy. For some reason, Dustin felt the need to snap a picture of me. Looking as crappy as I was feeling at that moment. BlackKitty's Korner...: Hiking in Sandan-kyo

http://blackkittyknits.blogspot.com/2013/10/hiking-in-sandan-kyo.html

Where I talk about being a mother, knitting, Japan, being part of the JET Program, books, movies, and my life in general. Monday, October 7, 2013. I really like hiking. It's one of those things my family did pretty often when I was a child, then fell away once we moved to New York City. For a few years now, I've been itching to go hiking, and when a friend of ours told us about this place, I decided that I'd visit it before I leave Japan. Once it was over, we took a bath as a family, which was really nic...

Where I talk about being a mother, knitting, Japan, being part of the JET Program, books, movies, and my life in general. Saturday, April 20, 2013. A Time of First Meetings. So after about 20 hours of traveling, we have finally arrived to New York City! I also had a chance to finish two movies, Billy Elliot and Hitchcock, both of which I liked very much. They had The Hobbit, too,but I dared not start such a long movie, in case I couldn't finish it. We got through immigration smoothly and our luggage came...

Life Out East

Thursday, June 20, 2013. I obviously haven't felt like blogging in a LONG time. I'm gonna attempt to catch up on some of the more major things we've done over the past several months. Starting with Paigey's first birthday! It kills me to look at these pictures because the little stinker is going to be a year and a half in 10 days. She is SO much different than the little girl in these pictures. I took some pictures of this little man when he was about 4 months old. And has cute feet. We had been planning...
