Elementary Observations

Tuesday, 11 August 2015. Studying the Solar System {with a Freebie}. How Small the Earth Is and The Sun's family. Children are often fascinated by magnitude of our sun and solar system and by providing them with pictures and activities that reveal the scale of the planets in relation to each other they can appreciate and grasp this concept more clearly. You could also cut a large yellow circle from A2 paper to include the sun to scale. There is plenty of scope to adapt these for yourself. For introducing...

Elementary Observations: Advanced Landforms I

http://www.elementaryobservations.blogspot.com/2015/07/advanced-landforms-i.html

Friday, 24 July 2015. I am so excited to share with you my land and water form cards. I have created a set of five part cards for the basic 10 land and water forms complete with definitions. You can find them HERE. When the child is ready to move on from these we start looking at more advanced land forms. I have created a set of 10 advanced land form cards, which will make a great starting point for transitioning to a more abstract understanding of land formation. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Elementary Observations: May 2015

http://www.elementaryobservations.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 30 May 2015. I have been tidying up my maths album and all my digital files, it has been a long drawn out process and I didn't realise just how many bits and pieces I have accumulated over the last five years. So I thought I would share some of my go to resources and some of the best free printable's for elementary maths that I have found. The Story of Number. The Story of the History of Mathematics. The Story of Numbers: Great Lesson #5. Great Lesson 5 Story of Numbers. From The Pinay Homescho...

Elementary Observations: April 2015

http://www.elementaryobservations.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 April 2015. I love classifying activities! They generate great discussion and real interest amongst the children which invariably leads to new and authentic work. Classifying animals into herbivore, carnivore and omnivore can generate some excellent discussion about animal features and adaptations and can lead to discussions about the food chain. By having a the complete set of these cards it means I am able to mix and match as required and have an interesting array of animal cards on hand.

Friday, 20 February 2015. Noun Boxes - Plural Nouns. Through noun study we introduce some of the nuances of English spelling. There are ten boxes for covering the rules for plural nouns. Today I am sharing the first three of these boxes. Nouns ending with a sibilant sound add 'es'. Nouns ending in '-f' '-fe' '-lf' that have a long vowel 'f' becomes 'v'. And be sure to enjoy some healthy discussion of the how and why the English language has evolved the way it has :). Links to this post. Amongst the items...

Elementary Observations: August 2015

http://www.elementaryobservations.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, 29 August 2015. I haven't really posted much on the subject of Zoology so I thought I could remedy that with a round-up post. Initial elementary work will overlap with work done in the Casa, but as the child is entering the second plane of development they are moving from the sensorial to the intellectual, capturing their imagination and sense of awe - building and expanding upon the child's experiences. Vertebrate and Invertebrate Sorting. From the Helpful Garden. From The Home School Den.

Montessori Mummy: Congratulations Jay!

http://montessorimummy.blogspot.com/2015/03/congratulations-jay.html

Monday, 2 March 2015. Jay is my nephew, and he often spends time with us. He used to come to me all summer long and beg me to teach him. We still do some things together, he still comes for holidays and the odd weekend and he is like a big brother to Addie and Bear (this is why he is included in this blog). Jay goes to school, and today, he found out he was accepted into his top choice of school for Year 7. We just wanted to say congratulations to Jay, and here is to the next chapter of your life! Here a...

Montessori Mummy: Build it, and it will come

http://montessorimummy.blogspot.com/2015/03/build-it-and-it-will-come.html

Tuesday, 10 March 2015. Build it, and it will come. I couldn't really think of a great title for this post, but I think this sums up a little of what I wanted to get across. Bear, on the other hand, I am not so concerned about. Today, he started doing this, copying his sister! So even with presentations I might be tempted to adapt or even skip, I need to make sure I don't and that I do things properly, so that if she has the opportunity to teach, she can do it in the 'right' way. 10 March 2015 at 14:45.

A Life Sustained: Pants for the Baby

http://alifesustained.blogspot.com/2015/04/pants-for-baby.html

Pants for the Baby. I'm actually excited to make them again in a larger size for the fall. I'm sure you already know because it's such a popular pattern, but they are the Quick Change Trousers from Horner's Handmade Beginnings. All fabrics were already in my stash; remnants from other projects (mostly this bunting. From Silas' first birthday). In the pair on the left: Heather Moore's Free as a Bird. Amy Butler's Eyelash Pine. By Oliver S. In the pair on the right: Heather Ross' Wildflowers.

A Life Sustained: Layers of the Soil

http://alifesustained.blogspot.com/2015/04/layers-of-soil.html

Layers of the Soil. Exploring soil this week. Bedrock, subsoil, top soil, leaf litter. Sprouting seeds. Dark crescents under our nails. Dirty hands. Happy that spring is here. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. April 15, 2015 at 8:02 AM. Soil is one of my favorites- probably my favorite subject to teach my college students about. Maybe because I have such fond memories of digging around as a child (and an adult too.). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Subscribe To A Life. WillywamWhimsy Natural Learning Blog.

Montessori Mummy: TED Talk: The power of introverts

http://montessorimummy.blogspot.com/2015/03/ted-talk-power-of-introverts.html

Friday, 6 March 2015. TED Talk: The power of introverts. One of the many questions people ask about home education is about socialisation. It is a big bugbear of mine, because school does not socialise children. And, some children are introverts. Susan Cain, in this TED Talk speaks of the power of introverts. The intent is to share what impact they have had on me in my current position as school principal. In a nut shell, the lessons I have learned are:. 2)It's okay to have fun. 4)Leadership begins with yourself. Thursday, July 29, 2010.

Elementary Online Curriculum

Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Ever since the publication of CCSS, the elementary curriculum in the US has been in a state of flux. Previously, there were obvious problems in the standards driving curriculum across the country. The biggest problems previously were:. Educational standards that did not match the testing standards which produced tension between teaching to the standards versus teaching to the tests. Switch in math from the historical focus on the procedures of calculation to the actual concepts.
