Incoherent thoughts on quantum coherence and other points of interest. Friday, May 2, 2014. Further Evidence of Element 117. Just published a paper in which an international group in Germany claimed to have repeated the 2010 results. Of the synthesis of element 117 (E117) by bombarding berkelium with a calcium beam (synopsis available here. Part 3: Electronic Structure Calculations. Anything that applies to astatine will apply even more strongly to E117. Im a graduate student in quantum chemistry in the ...

Incoherent thoughts on quantum coherence and other points of interest. Thursday, March 27, 2014. This tweet has been making the rounds today. UK discovered more elements in periodic table than any other country pic.twitter.com/yjN2BQ3QWx. 8212; UKTI (@UKTI) March 27, 2014. Overall I think its a fascinating chart, but I do have a couple of problems with it. One, it lists element 117 as undiscovered, despite the fact that it was synthesized by a joint U.S.-Russian team. Monday, March 24, 2014. The authors ...

Incoherent thoughts on quantum coherence and other points of interest. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Discovery of a Tetraquark. Interesting discovery coming out of CERN here. CERN's press release here. From the down and -. From the anti-up, for a total charge of -1. I can't speak to the quality of this research per se. But I do remember the excitement and subsequent let down over the pentaquark. Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Is Spin a Relativistic Effect? Levy-Leblond and First Order Wave Equations. Is it really i...

What have I learnt from post doc-ing? – The Organic Solution
https://theorganicsolution.wordpress.com/2014/11/06/what-have-i-learnt-from-post-doc-ing
Random musings about chemistry from the real world. November 6, 2014. What have I learnt from post doc-ing? Helping students is fun. 8211; When I first became a postdoc, I was worried about students asking me questions and me not knowing the answer. It turns out that I knew more than I think I did. There were plenty of times that I didn’t know the answer, but I gained enough experience to point the student in the right direction. I became a skilled technician. I can write half decent prose, much faster.

My allergy – Nail Polish – The Organic Solution

Random musings about chemistry from the real world. September 26, 2012. My allergy – Nail Polish. Many brands of nail polish are now water-based but the majority of nail polishes contain nitrocellulose dissolved in butyl acetate which is considered less environmentally friendly. Magnus Levy was the first person to prepare a synthetic material which formed a resin by condensation of formaldehyde and toluenesulfonamide in 1893. Actas Dermosifiliogr., 2009, 100, 53 60. http://quantumchymist.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Incoherent thoughts on quantum coherence and other points of interest. Thursday, September 4, 2014. Scientists (or at Least Theoreticians) as Cartographers. An interesting (and seemingly eternal) philosophical debate in science is that of scientific realism versus instrumentalism. My own experience seems to indicate that quite often, its actually scientists (and in particular physicists) who advocate an instrumentalist standpoint, while many philosophers argue a realist standpoint. Daniel Sadowsky comput...

Incoherent thoughts on quantum coherence and other points of interest. Sunday, June 8, 2014. Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference. First, apologies for the lack of posts lately, I've been quite busy with other obligations. I hope to have some more content up reasonably soon. As to one of those obligations, I will be presenting a poster at the upcoming Midwest Theoretical Chemistry Conference (MTCC). At Northwestern University on Sunday, June 15. View my complete profile.
