Not Enough Sand
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/index.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Monday, February 15, 2016. Court between a Shock, and a Hard Race. However, I find myself once again fascinated by the machinations of what happens next in the efforts to replace Scalia during what is already a fraught Presidential election year. The current President Obama has the first play now, by naming a nominee who must first clear the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, and then receive majority approval by the Senate (which the Republicans currently control). A cruci...

Not Enough Sand: "...My heart was filled with pride...."
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2013/05/my-heart-was-filled-with-pride.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Thursday, May 02, 2013. My heart was filled with pride.". Almost all of that time has been spent living in the UAE. This was not our intention. Michele left the UK, newly married, to move to a country and a people she knew nothing about. It was a brave and trusting decision on her part. But, it being entirely due to my job, she effectively did it for me. How would I describe Michele in 5 words? I had a dream last night. I dreamt you were by my side. Walking with me baby.

Not Enough Sand: January 2011
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Sunday, January 30, 2011. Random thoughts and introspection. In a period of great boredom (first working day back at work this week, and nothing - seriously, NOTHING - to do), here's a list of random stuff going on in my head. A list of things that probably need sorting out, if only I had the time. you know how it is / I am:. 1 After Jack's birthday sleepover this weekend (5 and 6 year olds x 5), why is it that other people's kids seem better behaved than ours? 5 Where should...

Not Enough Sand: Speaking up
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2013/04/speaking-up.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. When your choice of radio stations is as bland, uncontroversial, and clearly censored as regards content that even smells remotely contentious as the various offerings that are available in the UAE, I have long preferred to set the ipod (now housing just short of 9,000 tracks) to shuffle when driving to and from work. Nothing wrong with listening to Radio 4. And welcome to the Church of Wittertainment too! 30 May 2013 at 15:42:00 GMT 4.

Not Enough Sand: October 2010
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Sunday, October 31, 2010. A Treat or a Trick? I am the kind of person who finds it really difficult to change my mind about something when I have determinedly formed a view about it. And for years, the concept of 'Trick or Treat' every Halloween has been no better example of something I detest. I always feared for the little old ladies getting endless gangs of 'old enough to know better' yobs banging on their doors demanding money. I was only home from work in time to have th...

Not Enough Sand: "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about"
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-only-thing-worse-than-being-talked.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Monday, October 01, 2012. The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about". So said Oscar Wilde. I have never before had much of a reason to research the writings of Oscar Wilde. Nor even, if I'm honest, to give much thought to anyone by the name of Oscar. But I thought this quotation quite apt today, given the birth yesterday of my new nephew: Oscar Benjamin Watkins (of the all important weight of 7lb 1oz). It's unfortunate that, being so far away, we ...

Not Enough Sand: Accounting 101
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2013/04/accounting-101.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Monday, April 22, 2013. It is our financial year end at DLA Piper. The time when everyone is metaphorically squeezed until every last drop of billable time is drained from us, so that it can be included on bills that can then be despatched to our clients before the end of the month. Am I too simplistic in my undertanding of accountancy I wonder? Truly, Accounting is one of the Dark Arts. 8 May 2013 at 15:38:00 GMT 4. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Not Enough Sand: Year End Envy
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2013/06/year-end-envy.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Wednesday, June 26, 2013. In two days' time, Jack and Emma finish another school year. Rhys finished his nursery year yesterday. The long summer now stretches out before them all. Even longer than when I was their age - I had 6-7 weeks for summer holidays, whereas they now have nearly 10. At the end of next week, Michele and the three kids will head off to the UK, where they have a packed schedule of activities and catching up with friends. I will be here. At work. There was ...

Not Enough Sand: The Rules of (Dis)Engagement
http://notenoughsand.blogspot.com/2013/06/breaking-down-barriers.html
The Watkins' Desert Diaries. Sunday, June 02, 2013. The Rules of (Dis)Engagement. But here's the thing - Dads don't generally attend birthday parties. Unless you are duty bound to attend, due to the birthday child being one of your own (in which case your role is generally relegated to making drinks and taking photos - Mark, the father in question yesterday, performed both roles admirably), it is a rare thing to see a Dad at a birthday party. But there I was. Surely there is no more difficult a barricade...
