Farmer Jake: Marathon Madness
http://farmerjakef.blogspot.com/2015/02/marathon-madness.html
2013 Nuffield Farming Scholar. Sunday, 15 February 2015. For those of you that know me well, you will recall that every now and then I set myself a little challenge to raise some funds for a well know charity. In the past I have run the Bath half marathon for the RNLI and cycled for the Princes Trust as part of the Molson Barley Growers Team. Well I have signed up with Michelle to run the Virgin London Marathon. We are running for Farm Africa. Eight of out ten rural Africans scrape their living from smal...

2013 Nuffield Farming Scholar. Monday, 10 February 2014. Forageaid To Flooded Somerset. We were more than happy to donate over 80 bales of hay to the crisis down on the Somerset Levels. We are very grateful to all of the hauliers that are donating their lorries, fuel and labour to help supply feed to the animals in Somerset. Our feed was transported to the Sedgemoor Livestock Market with hauliers from Walsall in the West Midlands D.E.O'Reilly. Links to this post. Wednesday, 5 February 2014. So there a st...
Farmer Jake: October 2014
http://farmerjakef.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
2013 Nuffield Farming Scholar. Wednesday, 15 October 2014. On the positive side the Blackgrass flush is well and truly under-way and so, when we do get drilling again we should have a much cleaner seedbed in which to plant and less competition from this invasive weed in the crop. The only question is when are we likely to be able to get drilling again? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Farmer Jake on YouTube. I'm A Farmer, Just Ask Me! Farmer Jake: A Late Spring?
http://farmerjakef.blogspot.com/2015/04/a-late-spring.html
2013 Nuffield Farming Scholar. Wednesday, 15 April 2015. The beans were planted 10 days earlier, but germination was slower as the seed bed was cooler. As the sun shines the soil will continue to warm up and it is important that these crops get away to the very best start to optimise their potential and deliver a good harvest in August. There's a long way to go and we'll have to wait and see how the season develops. 1 May 2015 at 15:56. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Farmer Jake on YouTube.

Nuffield No-Till Travels: First post
http://tomjsewell.blogspot.com/2013/02/first-post.html
Tuesday, 26 February 2013. Well here's my first ever blog! And as the title suggests it will largely be covering the next year of my life and my Nuffield Scholarship Studies. Last year I was awarded a 2013 Nuffield Scholarship studying "long term benefits of direct drilling/no-till" sponsored by HGCA. I was presented with my award by Peter Kendall at the Nuffield conference last November where I met the rest of the 2013 scholars and heard the 2011 scholars give their reports. I'm hoping this blog will be...

Friday, 22 March 2013. Nuffield CSC and travels. Well, the last few weeks have been busy to say the least. On the 21st Feb I visited Harper Adams University in Shropshire to see the work of Prof Simon Blackmore and hear him talk about Precision farming. I was part of a group of 5 2013 Nuffield Scholars and it was nice to visit the place where I spent 2 years of my life 13 years ago! There were some excellent presentations with speakers from the UK, France and Ireland. On the 6 th of March I was off again...
Nuffield No-Till Travels: Week one in New Zealand
http://tomjsewell.blogspot.com/2013/12/week-one-in-new-zealand.html
Monday, 2 December 2013. Week one in New Zealand. Well what a whirlwind this Nuffield Scholarship is becoming! I must say i do feel rather guilty! Firstly for not blogging regularly when my travel buddy, Jake Freestone, is seemingly compiling one daily! And secondly for writing this having had a lovely warm sunny day driving down from Nelson at the top of the South Island to Methven on Canterbury Plains. It was t-shirt and shorts weather with shades as standard issue! During harvest and planting this aut...

Sunday, 24 June 2012. The Two Seater Toilet (Ty Bach). Hendre Ifan Goch Farm at Glynogwr had a toilet at the bottom of the garden that was flushed from a little stream running underneath, not unusual for farms but this one had 2 seats. The toilet was in need of some TLC and not having time to do this we asked the National Museum at St Fagans in 2008 if they would like it. Kenixton Farm at St Fagans. Hendre Ifan Goch Farm. Then came Storm Emma sucking Siberian air across Europe and freeze blasting the UK. Clearing snow on the Eckington Road. Links to this post. Monday, 18 December 2017. At the mo...
