Kelly, In Kagoshima. Tuesday, March 9, 2010. The SUN, Cooking Classes and Street Dancing. Oh, to have the sun on your bare skin after months of going about in layers and layers and layers! But alas, we are now back to ten degree weather and rain, rain, rain. Recently, Justin and I have been taking traditional Japanese cooking classes at a cooking studio. The menu has been really interesting. here we sliced our first なまこ(sea cucumber). I really don't recommend it! Last weekend we went to the 初午祭...

Kelly, In Kagoshima: April 2010
http://kelly-inkagoshima.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Kelly, In Kagoshima. Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Kyoto in the Spring. Kyoto was exactly how I had pictured Japan would be before I came - traditional buildings. Everywhere, a spotlight on traditional art and crafts, a mix of international and traditional cuisine - ha, basically everything that I have tried and failed to find in Kagoshima. We spent most of our time in Kyoto visiting temples (there are SO many! Wedding at the Sanjusangen. This temple houses 1000 guilded. And are decorated pieces of wood tha...

Kelly, In Kagoshima: March 2009
http://kelly-inkagoshima.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Kelly, In Kagoshima. Monday, March 23, 2009. I forgot what it felt like to have my windows open in the evening and to feel the sun on my shoulders! Not quite spring yet, but here she comes! Waiting for the bus in the rain with my students. This is what the beach looks like. Swimming? A small town recently visited where the descendents of Korean potters who were kidnapped and brought to Kagoshima by the local lord still live and make pottery. An amazing self-decorated house (I am guessing? Affair, the bri...

This place is right across the street from my house! And unlike the Red Sea, I feel like I can actually feel comfortable going in and grabbing a beer after work without feeling hella. 22 is gonna be a good year, I can feel it. May 28, 2009 at 11:25 PM. Kelly, In Kagoshima: February 2009
http://kelly-inkagoshima.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Kelly, In Kagoshima. Friday, February 20, 2009. On Okonomiyaki and Other Bits. Is a kind of savory pancake that usually has cabbage and many goodies mixed into the batter. " Okonomi. Means "however you like it" and " yaki. Means "grilled," so when you go to an okonomiyaki restaurant you choose from a menu of toppings and ingredients to have mixed into your pancake. Our server took care of us, flipping at the right times, removing grease and putting up with me high fiving him in excess. Album Cover Part I...

Kelly, In Kagoshima. Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Volcano Eruptions and Field Trips. As you may recall, Kagoshima city is on the west side of Kinkoan Bay (that gray area on the left) and right in the middle of the bay is our resident volcano, Mt. Sakurajima. Recently the old Sak has been sending her ash our way (normally when she erupts all the ash gets blown to the East) and making quite a mess. Here's a clip of a more significant erruption a couple months ago. Everyone had different ash protection methods.

Girl Drink Drunk: January 2009
http://squashedstrawberryalleycat.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Alcoholism at its finest. Saturday, January 3, 2009. From a cheap hotel room in a different state. As the list of dives grows ever longer with every passing weekend, it makes it all the more difficult to write sufficient reviews on a regular basis. My sincerest apologies. Either way, we must press on. But I must say, this is not the case! Here are some recent examples:. All the local barflies with an undying love for Biggums now seem to flock to The Avenue, making the crowd a little unpredictable, but I ...

Kelly, In Kagoshima: Warm Heart of Africa
http://kelly-inkagoshima.blogspot.com/2010/05/warm-heart-of-africa.html
Kelly, In Kagoshima. Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Warm Heart of Africa. Due to considerably lower airfare options if one chooses to change planes innumerable times, our journey began with a comparative tour of the airport systems of five countries. The Hong. Kong airport looked like. And in true Indian fashion it took an hour to move through a 20 foot security check line in Mumbai. Crawling across his palm. We started off in Johannesburg and then headed quickly out to Hazyview. We stayed in a rondavel. I hav...
