Beth and a Backpack: March 2010
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 9, 2010. There's social media.then there's Foursquare. I love social media. If used properly, Twitter and Facebook can help me not only stay connected with friends, family and coworkers, but it can also be an effective news -gathering tool. I use Twitter most, and it's time to write about Foursquare. I do not participate in Foursquare, but according to Mashable. Foursquare has all the right ingredients to be one of this year’s big hits. Now, I actually don’t know where Rebecca C....Sounds ...

Beth and a Backpack: November 2009
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 26, 2009. I finally finished my series "Status of the Stimulus." The trio of stories aired November 23, 24, and 25 on KOMU 8 News in Columbia, Missouri. The entire process was a whirlwind of research, writing, returning phone calls, and Redbull. Below is a list of the most important things I learned during this process:. 3 Ask for input. Having not just one but multiple people look at my scripts improved them and clarify. I had a fabulous high school teacher who used to wear a ...2 Doc...

Beth and a Backpack: December 2009
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 8, 2009. I got a tip for a story yesterday: A 30-year-old Columbia man was found by police dead in his home last Friday, utilities turned off. I've heard of this situation before; elderly individuals succumb to the elements after defaulting on payments. What struck me about this story was that this man was. All of these situations are tragic, this one just took me by surprise. Just goes to show how all days of reporting, and the people that fill those days, are exceptionally different.

Beth and a Backpack: April 2010
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 30, 2010. Here Comes the President. KOMU 8 learned that President Barack Obama would be stopping by the Show-Me State during the week, to visit a unique biorefinery in Macon, Missouri (population about 5,500). Macon is in KOMU's viewing area, so this was big news Mid-MO. On Monday night I got the email that I would be covering the event as a live reporter, along with a dayside reporter colleague, Jennifer Meckles (check out her blog here. Of a barbecue cart, a group of five discussing the p...

Sunday, June 27, 2010. Here's my portion of the Saturday 6 pm from last night:. Saturday, June 26, 2010. My favorite reporting days are those when I get to meet dynamic people. Today was one of those days; I covered the Key Ceremony for Army SSG Robert Canine. Robert and his family received the keys to their new fully wheelchair-accessible home through Homes For Our Troops (check out that website here. Doctors had to amputate both of Canine's legs after an explosive hit his vehicle in Baghdad in 2009.

Beth and a Backpack: December 2010
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 5, 2010. Currently, I'm producing the 6 pm Wednesday through Friday at KVAL, then weekend producing. With this schedule, I've found my on-the-job learning is vastly different depending on the day. Was off with Loren (his website. To find out more about Mohamed Osman Mohamud. I coordinated from the newsroom: looking up info for them, contacting the FBI about the lengthy investigation into Mohamud, coordinating with our sister station in Portland, and satisfying the demands of CBS netw...

Beth and a Backpack: Lost...Then Found
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2010/06/lostthen-found.html
Wednesday, June 23, 2010. One of my favorite aspects of working in news (really, like top three) is the fact that no day is exactly like any other. On Monday, June 21, I was set to live report for the 10 pm I've had this shift since mid-May, and I have been covering various meetings as Monday night is all about Columbia City Council, the school board, etc. But not this week. I TA-ed the 5 pm newscast, and right before the C-block, news director Stacey Woelfel (check out his blog here. There was an error ...

Beth and a Backpack: Closure
http://bethford.blogspot.com/2010/05/closure.html
Thursday, May 27, 2010. I started a story in January, and it finally aired last week. I still remember people involved in stories I worked on two years ago, but because of the long duration of this particular one, the women involved will always have a place in my memory. Kasey Breda (my fabulous videographer on this story - check out her website here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). My name is Beth, and I'm a backpack journalist.
