The Spring: Tinariwen!
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/06/tinariwen.html
Thursday, June 11, 2015. Saturday 6th June, 2015. Little Mongeham, near Deal, Kent. Will Greenham mentioned to me last year that he was looking to get Tinariwen to come and play at the Smugglers Festival site. I filed that away in the "totally implausible, but this is Will Greenham here, so you never know" folder. And it came to pass. Hot Feet: The quartet from Stroud. Marianne — what a voice! They're one of these bands which stand out by the near impossibility of describing their music. The programm...

The Spring: Wisconsin again
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/05/wisconsin-again.html
Friday, May 15, 2015. I'm sitting in my central Wisconsin friend Peter's basement down in Madison, my last night in Wisconsin after four weeks. His band (currently unnamed) is rehearsing — they're playing a kind of intelligent rock music, with elements of prog and spacerock, a new bass player, a young guitar virtuoso ripping it up, etc. Impressive guitarist (exploratory playing, more Trey Anastasio than Jerry Garcia). Most of the Kyerokaya lineup I saw. Group of folkies playing Irish tunes as well as num...

The Spring: as heard at Bramleys jazz session
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/07/heard-at-bramleys-jazz-session.html
Friday, July 24, 2015. As heard at Bramleys jazz session. 21/07/15 Bramleys, Canterbury. These fortnightly jazz jams are always worth going along to, but the quality inevitably varies depending who shows up. This one tended towards vocal jazz, standards, not my kind of thing. Still, James Ross showed up late with his sax and injected a bit of personality into proceedings, and young guitarist Luke (getting very. Plus Lawence Fletcher on sax and a very competent ad hoc. And it was breathtaking. Garcia, Gri...

The Spring: Cocos at the Astor
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/05/cocos-at-astor.html
Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Cocos at the Astor. The Astor Theatre, Deal. This was Cocos Lovers. Raising funds to release their (now completed) new fourth album, Twisted Moon. Support was from ex-Cocos member Poggy Hatton and her band (including Phil and Billy from Cocos, her husband James on drums and new recruit Adam Whitaker on unfortunately not-very-audible grand piano). She played a lot of new stuff, all sounding great. Posted by Matthew Watkins at 5:17 PM. Canterbury, Kent, United Kingdom. David Bowie - ...

The Spring: walk/picnic and Refugee Tales
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/07/walkpicnic-and-refugee-tales.html
Saturday, July 04, 2015. Walk/picnic and Refugee Tales. Hannah (partner of Joel from Syd Arthur) had thoughtfully organised a walk/picnic in the Harbledown area and invited Tom and I to play some acoustic music, inspired by the semi-public airing of our music in the Greyfriars garden in April. Along the way to raise awareness of the plight of the detainees via poetry, song and storytelling. Local experimental pianist Sam Bailey (the man behind the Free Range. As well as some soulful jazzy loveliness from...

The Spring: the rest of 2014
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-rest-of-2014.html
Monday, February 16, 2015. The rest of 2014. This blog is still on hiatus for the next while, but I thought I'd quickly document various musical goings on for the last part of 2014:. A lot of saz and guitar/ukelele jams with Tom Holden at his new place (part of the old Greyfriars estate) next to Binnewith Island. 17/09/2014: Luke Smith and the Feelings, a free lunchtime concert in the Greyfriars grounds, part of the Wise Words poetry/spoken word festival. My curation, very happy with the outcome! Origina...

The Spring: Farewell Daevid
http://soundsfromthespring.blogspot.com/2015/03/farewell-daevid.html
Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Freaks reading this will by now have heard that the Divided Alien. Has departed for the Isle of Everywhere. Here's a lovely photo by my friend Neil Sloman. I was lucky enough to have spent a day out with Daevid in the Canterbury area. In 2012, the results of which can be heard in the final installation of my Canterbury Soundwaves. I also got to see him and Gilli onstage in Brighton on the final Gong tour. That year (he had more energy than anyone in the audience, it seemed!
