Hana Shoup ArtSelf-Portrait: Hands and Hair. During my month long residency at DRAW international, I completed five large drawings, all charcoal and graphite on paper. During one of my walks, I saw barbed wired embedded in a tree. It made me think about man-made intrusions to nature with barriers and boundaries. The contrast of the cold metal with the warm wood also suggested conflict, while the texture of the tree bark implies flesh struggling with its adversary. Tree and Wire (detail). Through the Looking Glass.
