In a remarkably short distance, something like 2.5km, along a riverbed, dry in summer, exists a vast panoply of images, accurately depicting the life of the hunter gatherer San; from the wildlife extant at the time to hunters in action, and a marvellously celebratory group of women dancing. Is a special location: buried deep in the heart of the arid, harsh Tankwa Karoo. High on the slopes of Kasteelberg.

From The Sunday Times, 3 April 2016, illustrating the difficulty of protecting remote heritage sites. In 2009 I stumbled onto the forlorn farm complex of Matjiesrivier. It must have made a grand appearance at one time, snuggled magnificently in a shallow valley alongside a stream from which it derives its name, in the middle of a large triangle formed by Porterville, Piketberg and Moorreesburg.
