Saturday, 30 July 2011. View from Shallow water hide in Manton Bay. The juveniles at Manton Bay fledged about two weeks ago and all are flying confidently now. It is difficult to always make out their ring numbers but this is blue 52, the first to leave the nest. They mostly just flew from one perch to another but always returned to the nest if there was any sign of a fish arriving. Their parents were sitting on an adjacent perch trying to ignore the constant food begging calls. Later he brought them the...

Sunday, 26 June 2011. The Manton Bay chicks are about a month old and can be easily seen above the nest rim. They are joining in with their mother to encourage 5R to go fishing for their tea. He circled Manton Bay coming over towards the hides before plunging into the water near the perch and coming up with a small fish. Unfortunately for him a pair of shelduck took great exception to this and chased him aggressively back to his nest. He did well to hold on to the fish. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Monday, 31 January 2011. Kinmel Bay - Snow Buntings. A trip to North Wales was arranged to escape cloudy Shropshire. The sun was out all day but the temperature hovered around zero. The receding tide froze and left an interesting pattern of ice crystals. Meadow pipits enjoyed the seed as well. Tuesday, 18 January 2011. Unusual visitors in work at lunchtime today, a party of about 20 waxwings arrived and fed on very large rose hips, only just managing to swallow one at a time before having a long rest.

Sunday, 26 December 2010. Lovely sunny day but -15 degrees in Shropshire on Christmas morning. Some snow still left in Limeslade on Boxing day. Making the cliff path rather slippery. The usual mediterranean gulls were still in Bracelet. With the unusual addition of a couple of lapwing trying to probe the frozen ground. Nice to see he's still around. Snow had melted for the return journey to be replaced by fog. Wednesday, 8 December 2010. The temperature only reached a high of -6 degrees.

Thursday, 2 February 2012. It was a long cold wait in the Zeiss hide for one of the bitterns to show itself in the reed bed but well worth it in the end.

Tuesday, 14 September 2010. Venus Pool - Greenshank. Sunday, 12 September 2010. I expected the ospreys to have all left on migration by now but there were reports of three still in Manton bay during the week so I decided it was worth taking the chance that they would still be around. Before I even reached the hide I could hear an osprey calling -. 30 eventually flew to another perch and stared intently at the water below. Before plunging straight in. And coming up with a very small fish. Juvenile 30 left...

Wednesday, 14 December 2011. There is a pleasant walk from the hotel along the rocky coast, if the wind is in the right direction there can be spectacular waves breaking near the lighthouse. A flock of Trumpeter finch searching for seeds on the beach just outside my hotel. An outdoor aviary in the grounds of a hotel proved a temptation for this inexperienced kestrel. No luck there so what about the Trumpeter finch flock? Tuesday, 13 December 2011. Lanzarote - Montana Roja. They blend in well to their sur...

Tuesday, 13 December 2011. Lanzarote - Montana Roja. I always have a walk up the volcano behind the hotels in Playa Blanca, a round trip takes a couple of hours and gives good views from the top. Once you reach the top there is a track around the edge of the crater, it is also worth descending to the bottom where there is an area of vegetation, home to Great Grey Shrikes which breed there in spring. It is not easy to find the shrikes in winter as they tend to hide in thorny bushes and are generally silent.
