Steam-fixed dyes for silk. Work in Natural Dyes. Probably more than natural and synthetic dyes, wax, resists, and history. Most of my work is made using resist-dyed techniques. Resist-dyeing is any technique where the dye is in some way impeded from reaching selected areas of the fabric (or yarn, as in ikat). One way it can be achieved is by sewing, tying, binding, folding, and clamping; those of us who remember any of the 1960s used to call it. These days most people call it. Stitched resist with indigo.

Steam-fixed dyes for silk. Work in Natural Dyes. Probably more than natural and synthetic dyes, wax, resists, and history. Historical Dyeing days at Leewood in the Dartmoor National Park. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, when chemists devised the means to produce synthetic dyes, all textiles were dyed with natural materials such as plants, insects and shellfish. In discussion one day, they realised that no-one appeared to have studied possible variation occurring in the take-up of natural dyes...

Natural Dyes | Isabella Whitworth

Steam-fixed dyes for silk. Work in Natural Dyes. Probably more than natural and synthetic dyes, wax, resists, and history. I think it is as important to know the source of a dyestuff as it is to know where food comes from. I am unable to grow much dyestuff but for several years have been producing a crop of Japanese indigo (. An article which I co-authored with Christina Chisholm on the growing and use of Japanese indigo can be downloaded free from the Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers website here.

A history of Colour: February 2012

http://colourextractor.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

A history of Colour. Sunday, 26 February 2012. I love my New Skein Winder. Hello everyone, Happy New Year! Yes I know I'm slow but I'm getting there! I would really like to get back into blogging, so I'll try and get back here much more often from now on! There is also the problem of the size of skein - they had to remain the size they are now when using my niddy noddy, the display stand is already designed for them! All I have to do now is sit down comfortably and gently treadle (even whilst watching TV!

A history of Colour: January 2013

http://colourextractor.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

A history of Colour. Sunday, 20 January 2013. I know that many parts of UK are suffering from snow at the moment, but I just thought I'd say that we have some too! It's stopping me from getting into the dyehouse at the moment, which I am not happy about as I have work to do and experiments to play with! Temperatures have been down to -10 at night and not above freezing during the day. I guess you could say that winter has finally arrived! On a positive side I am sitting here on my computer working! Apart...

A history of Colour. Sunday, 24 February 2013. Adding to the woodpile. As you can see we get a really random selection - it can be anything, but within this hotch potch of wood is some beautiful hardwood that can be used to make textile tools! Once we get the wool home we play the game of "one for you, one for me" as John enjoys himself picking over all the wood and choosing the pieces that he wants. He will hold a piece up and say "what's this then? Mediaeval Tablet looms and tablets, Inkle looms, shutt...

A history of Colour. Friday, 19 April 2013. A treat from Pontoise. This weekend has been the Marche Medieval in Pontoise an event we have been doing for quite a few years now. I'd like to thank Christophe and his team from Histoire Vivante for all their hard work organising such a successful event. It's lovely, thank YOU Marie-Alix for both coming to see us and for the wool. I have been walking on air since you came! Wednesday, 10 April 2013. It is completely self contained, dry and cool. A history of Colour: August 2012

http://colourextractor.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

A history of Colour. Thursday, 9 August 2012. In the UK weld is considered a weed that needs to be got rid of as quickly as possible - well so it seems whenever I find a stand of it flourishing. A few weeks ago I spotted the most enormous stand of weld - but not ready to pick, so I patiently waited a few weeks and then went back, oh no, virtually all gone! An hour spent going round the area yielded. This was tied up in bundles like this. These were tied onto a "sheila maid" under the dye house canopy.

http://colourextractor.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

A history of Colour. Saturday, 21 June 2014. If you follow me on Facebook you'll have read that this year we have lots of demo work commemorating the Centenary of the start of WW1. In the past I would have said "ugh chemical dyes, no way! But having started researching the colour Khaki not only is the subject fascinating I've discovered they used lots of natural dyes too! Actually I should perhaps clarify Khaki a little! This colour was adopted officially by the British Army not long afterwards. So far I...

A history of Colour: September 2012

http://colourextractor.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

A history of Colour. Tuesday, 25 September 2012. What can have coloured my silk? I have just prepared a variety of silk fibres and yarns ready for dyeing. There are several winter markets coming up so I thought I ought to get started - but without the usual panic and rush! Maybe this was a bad idea! ALL the fibres and yarns were Mulberry silk so white rather than cream or caramel coloured. I scoured them all first - but in separate pans as I didn't want the fibres attaching themselves to the yarns. I am ...
