The Weight of the Matter. Many thanks to Kasey Edwards, whose post on the website Role Reboot. When Your Mother Says She's Fat". Got me thinking and largely inspired this post.]. I would also become skinny. The two were synonymous, right? But I never got skinny, and I never felt good. My weight didn't budge. At least it didn't budge downward. All I got was a huge gym bill and a herniated disc in my neck from lifting too-heavy weights at my trainer's insistence. Dust off your bike! Train for a 5K! There i...

An Honest Conversation About Ferguson. Believe me, I have been thinking for some time now about writing a post about the events that have been unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri. (In case you have been living without benefit of news outlets, you can catch up by reading a fairly good, if sparse, timeline of the events here. Peace has not been restored, and all is not well in America. As Mother Jones. Why haven't I written about it? Can we get to the root of and address the disproportionate numbers of African...

Still Life with Crockpot: The Approach of Spring
http://jennieiswriting.blogspot.com/2015/03/the-approach-of-spring.html
The Approach of Spring. There is no feeling like spring. That seems extreme. Someone on the radio said that, given how rare these events are, it seems impractical to change the way cockpit door locks operate. I’m sure that the families who lost someone are not comforted by the idea that it’s statistically unlikely to happen to anyone else anytime soon. Congratulations to your daughter, what a great testament to how she was raised that she wants to finish highschool on top of her game! Facebook (Follow My...

Well, hello, there, readers. It's been a while since I have written anything in this space, and I apologize if I have left you hanging. It's been a very snowy and busy winter here in our little hamlet on the Hudson. You don't follow me on Twitter? Top-down Fair Isle sweater for Becky. Here she is wearing it, so you can see the detail. Bobby mitts (in a seeded rib pattern). Maggie mitts (mistake rib pattern). Maggie mitts in a hand-dyed wool. Sarah mitts, with a ring cable pattern. I'll leave you, for the...

The air in these parts is heavy with sadness today; all around me, people are feeling and revisiting the losses they suffered twelve years ago. The ubiquitous photos of the World Trade Center and the waving American flags don't help; one friend told me it's like being shown, over and over, year after year, the wreckage of an accident in which a loved one died. Fairies Teenagers Can Believe In. Fear not. I have gone through this period and come out in one piece on the other side, and I have a solution for you. It is my pleasure to introduce your older offspring to a solution that works for them. It is a continuation, if you will, of the active fantasy life so essential to their healthy development. Fairies, elves, and fictional creatures they can continue to believe in. 1 The Laundry Fairy. And you barely lifted a finger! 2 The Toilet Paper Elf. 3 The Dish Bunny.

I explained the plan to my daughters. Sarah, the older one, liked the idea and immediately started diving through her drawers, looking for things to swap. Becky, the younger one, was unimpressed and told me she wasn't going to participate. I asked. "A lot of the girls are going to do it.". But Becky was certain that she didn't want to trade with the others. I've changed my mind. I want to do it.". Oh, no. "I think it's too late, honey. You didn't bring anything along to trade! I peered into her bag. ...

On Race, Violence, and Social Constructs. C Loring Brace, an American anthropologist at the University of Michigan, argues. That, biologically speaking, there is no such thing as race. What we think of as "race," in humans, is simply the concentration of inherited physical traits in a given population, based on geography and, to a great extent, social isolation. And that distinctive look is the root of our concept of "race.". And what are we doing? A Facebook friend attacked me last week for the sin of s...

About Those Things You're Not Supposed To Say To Writers. Yesterday, there was a hashtag running wild on Twitter. I follow a lot of professional writers, so I saw a lot of tweets carrying the tag: #TenThingsNotToSayToAWriter. They were mostly funny, but some of them made me cringe. And one or two of them shot me right through the heart. For example:. I learned quickly, however, that the world is so saturated with writers doing their own thing that my opinion simply doesn't matter. Links to this post.
