Broken Arrow OK Morning. Broken Arrow OK Morning. In May of this year, I was able to attend a workshop “Beyond the Obvious” by Mike Bailey. It was a great time. One day, Mike mentioned the building across the street enjoying the sun and shadows. The next day, he brought in a painting. (He posted his on his blog, dated May 12 2014.). I just had to try it too. Mostly watercolor and some mixed watermedia. So my Friend Chris introduced me to Vivian and I knew I wanted to paint her. She was wearing a coffee-colored outfit that she designed and created. I thought a warmer color for the fabric….and just felt like a green face would perk it up. It took six attempts. Then I entered the work in the NWS (National Watercolor society competition) and was rejected. I like it quite a bit. What do you think? Love your Vivian series! Especially the one with the green face!

Blue Vases After Skip. Blue Vases After Skip. I found this painting while returning my studio to order when the update was finished. This was painted about 1996 soon after a workshop with Skip Lawrence. He encouraged the emphasis of color contrast. So here, there is a dominance of blue with variation of warm to color. Low-key warms are placed next-to the cools. The fiddler has found its way into a number of works. I believe his teaching has noticeably influenced my choices. I still like this one.

Ellen Roles: Untitled 22x30 Watercolor

I am unsure about this one. I like the watercolor feel, edges quality and the strong value statement. However, the colors do not seem to be “me.”. I like warmer compositions. There is this tugging inside me now to paint watercolor…meaning enjoying the flow, freshness, the paint doing its thing…that distinct look only found in watercolor. Not sure where I am going …. Any ideas what to name this one? Thanks Myrna. yes when I put the darks in it moved from being pretty to something more powerful.
