Teaching, learning, and leading without walls. Newer posts →. July 27, 2013. I wanted a new way to go over the usually boring “course expectations” with students on day 1 of classes… it needs to be done, but reading through a paper document wasn’t terribly interesting (for them or me). I wanted to create something exciting and dynamic… I think this fits the bill, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I’m wondering whether I’ll get any “how did you do that? I thought I knew PowerPoint…. He speculat...

ICTyler: December 2012

http://ictyler.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 17 December 2012. I was a frequent user of Make-a-Flake. This year. Make-a-Flake strives for authenticity: virtual scissors with sound and all cuts are straight and follow the laws of actually cutting a snowflake. SnowDays is a little more lenient. You can do polygon cutting or just click and drag cut, which allows for nice curves. The edges need not be honoured. Plus you can view others' flakes and download them if you like them. It's a lot of fun to do. Here are some of mine. Throughout my life...

Check It Out: Test Prep | The Featured Teacher

https://thefeaturedteacher.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/check-it-out-test-prep

Check It Out: Test Prep. In the midst of standardized test prep I think it is important to remember that students need confidence in their own abilities. And here is a video that is all about just that! Happy Valentines Day everybody! I’ll see you this weekend. 2 responses ». February 17, 2013 at 10:23 am. I believe schools pay little attention to strategies related to this approach in favor of the quick fix cheerleading (which again I think it useful as a supplement). Good luck on the testing! You are c...

Friday, 27 September 2013. Tournament of Words: September. Today I held my first Tournament of Words in my three grade nine English classes. I wasn't sure exactly how it would go, since it is the first of my "out there" ideas that I'm using in my class. I used random.org/lists. To fill the brackets and better bracket maker. To conduct each tournament. Found in Anne Frank's Diary. I'm pretty sure they voted for it just because they wanted to keep hearing me struggle to pronounce it. None of my classes are...

ICTyler: July 2013

http://ictyler.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Friday, 19 July 2013. Last month I tweeted a little pun:. Why do educators spend so much time on reflection, yet ignore refraction and diffraction? 8212; Tyler Letkeman (@Tyler JL) June 27, 2013. However, it got me thinking of how these three wave phenomena actually describe reflective practice pretty well. In physics the white areas represent a medium, be it air, water, diamond, vacuum, &c. Relating this to reflective practice shows that when we share ideas or practices they no longer are ours. The ...

THE MINI MEUNIERS

Sunday, January 3, 2010. WARNING: This is a big post with a lot of media that may be over stimulating for some viewers. If you have any sort of heart condition, please only view a few items at a time and revisit after a few days. We were in Great Falls with my family and had nearly 50 for dinner. I rather absentmindedly volunteered to make mashed potatoes. After peeling 40 lbs of potatoes (thanks for the help Sam and Maddie! December began with a lovely but quick visit from my dear Seattle friends. C...
