About Us
http://leedshaydnplayers.org.uk/page2.html
Is a chamber orchestra formed with the aim of exploring the whole of Haydns great symphonic repertoire, with the possible future inclusion of quartets, divertimenti and so on. Some of this is hardly known, some of it well-known, so it should be an interesting orchestral journey for players and listeners alike. We are a mix of professional and committed amateur players. We pay to play! I love Haydn, not for any great intellectual reason. I just like him. I come out feeling better than I went in...Ellio...

Beethoven Romance in F for violin and orchestra. Haydn Symphony No 99. Beethoven Symphony No 1. Leeds Haydn Players own resident critic says : The last concert, on 9th October 2011, was very much enjoyed by both orchestra and audience. Audience members since then, have made a point of saying how much they enjoyed the concert and others have sent emails saying the same. So its safe to say that everyone enjoyed themselves. Beethovens first Symphony completed the concert. Very different and yet very sim...

Without Barlines: Notation and Scoring Ideas (or: Dealing with One-‘Note’ Music)
http://withoutbarlines.blogspot.com/2014/04/notation-and-scoring-ideas-or-dealing.html
Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. Notation and Scoring Ideas (or: Dealing with One-‘Note’ Music). Most significantly the call made me think carefully about developing features of my work that I simply haven’t got round to scrutinising in any particularly useful way. What follows is, roughly speaking, the mental journey I’ve subsequently taken and, I hasten to add, not finished. What is a musical idea? A sound or series of sounds (what often gets called ‘material’)? What is musical notation?
Without Barlines: Some thoughts on open notation and late-stage collaboration
http://withoutbarlines.blogspot.com/2013/12/some-thoughts-on-open-notation-and-late.html
Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. Some thoughts on open notation and late-stage collaboration. Anyone who’s followed this blog (or anyone in the wake of my tirade of shameless self-promotion over the last couple of weeks) will probably be aware that my newest work, Personal Space. Receives its premiere this weekend. As you might imagine, the gears have been stepping-up as ‘the big day’ approaches and now we’re in the full throws of final preparations. What am I talking about? Immediately I w...
Without Barlines: An Introduction: Doing Music & Being a Musician
http://withoutbarlines.blogspot.com/2013/07/an-introduction-doing-music-being.html
Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. An Introduction: Doing Music and Being a Musician. Welcome to my new blog, Without Barlines. This is all well and good, but I doubt it would be much use to me (or anybody else) to consider any of this in isolation. I’ve recently started working as a copyist for composer Nigel Morgan. Speaking of orchestration and conducting, I’ve had some wonderful experiences with the band Starling. I am a musician. I do. Music And, crucially, I believe that music does.
Without Barlines: Space for Music
http://withoutbarlines.blogspot.com/2013/10/space-for-music.html
Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. The ever-decreasing space I’ve had for music. Lately I’ve been both fortunate and unfortunate in equal measure. I’ve taken up a new job – an exciting and stimulating job that has me working in the music industry full-time; I’ve managed to find myself a new home; I’m working on a commission from the London Sinfonietta. For a solo double bass piece to be premiered at the Southbank Centre in December. An invitation to find new musical space. The central ideas I...
Without Barlines: Audiences and Openness
http://withoutbarlines.blogspot.com/2014/09/audiences-and-openness.html
Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. Now here’s a contentious topic: the relationship between music and audiences. Cue all kinds of stereotyping, wild generalisations, radical rejections, stalwart traditionalism and utter confusion. I mentioned in my introductory post on openness. I’m going to pose lots of questions – implicitly if not explicitly. I’m not sure I have answers to them and, if I do, I’m not sure how long they’ll remain relevant. An audience (a...The Industry and its Institutions.
Without Barlines: August 2013

Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. Review: 'A Whispered Shout' (or Beer, Sandwiches and Experimental Music). Last weekend (3 August) I had the pleasure of experiencing A Whispered Shout. Described by its organiser as ‘an afternoon of contemporary and experimental music featuring a wide variety of different sounds and approaches’. Indeed! A B(l)ack Room in South London. I should begin by saying something about the venue. Matthew’sYard. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Opening-up to Openness in Music.

Taking a non-partitioned look at musical life. Opening-up to Openness in Music. Since putting the word ‘openness’ in my Twitter bio I’ve been asked on numerous occasions, online and in person, what I mean by this. In fairness, the idea’s been gathering steam in my compositional practice over the last couple of years, so I’ve been discussing the matter on the back of other mentions, too.
