Literacy and Citizenship

Sunday, January 20, 2013. A Positive School Climate Lasts Longer Than Metal Detectors. School Climate Matters. Students need to feel safe and cared for. They need to feel accepted and to feel like they belong. Schools should invest time and effort into building a positive climate, and a good way to start is by completing a survey of teachers and students to get their perspectives on the climate of the school. The goal is for all. Students and teachers to feel safe and cared for. Schools have the responsi...

Literacy and Citizenship: August 2011

http://literacyandcitizenship.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 21, 2011. Bullying Policies - Changing the Motivation To Do The Right Thing. Through my Twitter PLN, I was recently introduced to the book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Now the organization isn’t focused on affirmatively pursuing diversity but rather on making sure that all the boxes are checked off to show that what it did is OK (and so it won’t get sued). Before, its workers had an intrinsic motivation to do the right thing, but now they have an ex...I hope that t...

Literacy and Citizenship: Can Empathy Be Taught?

http://literacyandcitizenship.blogspot.com/2011/08/can-empathy-be-taught.html

Sunday, August 14, 2011. Can Empathy Be Taught? I don't believe that empathy can be taught. I can't make you. A certain way. As a parent, how many times have I tried to tell my children that they should be proud of themselves or that they should feel sorry for something they've done? Too many times to count and the results weren't usually what I hoped for them to be. It took me a long time to learn this. This has to be. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Responsibility, respect, kindness, fairness, hone...

Saturday, January 21, 2012. Behavior - Whose Responsibility is It? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What are the characteristics of a good citizen and how do we help our students to become good citizens? Responsibility, respect, kindness, fairness, honesty come to my mind when I ponder this, and I do this often. My goal is to share my passion about literacy and social responsibility and to learn from others on my journey as a life-long learner. Behavior - Whose Responsibility is It?

Literacy and Citizenship: Rethinking Bullying Policies

http://literacyandcitizenship.blogspot.com/2012/05/in-previous-posts-ive-written-that-i.html

Monday, May 21, 2012. In previous posts, I've written that I believe bullying laws won't teach children to be empathetic, and I still don't believe that bullying laws will make administrators, teachers or students do the right thing. I still believe that schools need to create cultures that support and affirm differences and cultures that will not tolerate put downs and disrespect. Easier said than done, I know, but worth the work. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Literacy and Citizenship: July 2011

http://literacyandcitizenship.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 24, 2011. Education Rethink (John T. Spencer): A Sustainable Start: Actually, It Is Personal. Saturday, July 16, 2011. My Sister Made Me Do It! July 16, 2011. On Twitter, I found a visionary group of educators and leaders who have opened my eyes to the possibilities in education. My knowledge of technology in education has grown by leaps and bounds, and I can't wait to get back to school to put these ideas into practice. Professional development is always at my fingertips.

Having acknowledged International Literacy Day on September 8th and hearing about the efforts made to address the poor literacy in our communities, we continue to ask, are these practices enough?
