The Little Bookroom

Saturday, February 11, 2012. I've been reading a recent edition of John Holt's book of homeschooling, Teach Your Own. Mostly because I think John Holt is brilliant. I don't, of course, need to be convinced that homeschooling is a good idea, but sometimes it is helpful to be reminded why I'm choosing to keep my children at home instead of sending them away and getting a little peace and quiet! Beyond that, there are a number of practices, by now very common in schools all over the country, which in and of...

Wednesday, August 11, 2010. It took me a while to decide how to categorize these titles; I've listed our favorites first, then grouped the rest by attention span (according to the amount of text on each page, not necessarily the difficulty of the content). The author's name is first, followed by the illustrator. We are especially fond of the following books as well, in alphabetical order:. Jill Barklem: Brambly Hedge. Elsa Beskow: Pelle's New Suit. Barbara Cooney: Miss Rumphius. Irene Haas: The Maggie B.

Sunday, March 06, 2011. Well, I persevered through The Crowded Street. And in the end I suppose it was worthwhile. Perhaps I was in the wrong mood, or the comparison with Miss Buncle's Book. Was too stark, but I felt somewhat wearied by another story about a young woman whose family, situation, and disposition were all against her. Fortunately it ended well. Then I picked up The New House. But overall I liked it much better. It was shorter, for one thing ( The Crowded Street. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Then I started to notice that he rarely mentioned girls or domestic activities. All of his examples of a good imaginative life were about boys doing things that might have come straight from The American Boy's Handy Book. http://littlebookroom.blogspot.com/2011/02/im-sliding-this-post-in-under-wire-for.html

Sunday, February 27, 2011. I'm sliding this post in under the wire for Persephone Reading Weekend. I hope. We spent most of the weekend in town with my parents-in-law, which allowed me to read but not to blog. I had hoped to get through three Persephones. But sadly only managed one and a half; fortunately the one was very much worthwhile. Miss Buncle's Book. By DE Stevenson, reminded me a great deal of my first Persephone read, Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tuesday, June 29, 2004. I guess that is where faith comes in once again, pressing on even though I don't know what I'm going into, and trusting that the Lord will give guidance in the right time. Reflections by a Reluctant Observer of the Juridical System. Friday, October 21, 2005. Contains a few interesting points on New Mexico chile cultivation, including the observation that there are regionally developed variations within the variety traditionally identified with the state. I myself have noticed that I generally prefer northern-grown pods to the bitterer, more common ones from Hatch, but had always ascribed the difference to chile. So, what do you do with that degree? Monday, August 09, 2004. I rose today in the early morning and seemed to sense something new. Indeed, in a single night the back of the summer had been broken. The air was filled with the cool aroma of autumn, the smell of decaying leaves, a longing for distances. -. Pavel Florensky, The Pillar and Ground of Truth. It appears that the soul finds itself in seeing this death, that it has a foretaste of resurrection in this fluttering. -. So what is it you're celebrating?

So, what do you do with that degree? Monday, December 13, 2004. Oh, sunlight is a good thing! I arrived back in the sunlit southern lands today, after a long trip from dark and stormy Kodiak. Amazingly enough, both I and my luggage arrived at our destination. At the same time even! A pretty impressive feat, considering how many thousands of miles we covered in a relatively short time. Reflections by a Reluctant Observer of the Juridical System. Monday, June 14, 2004. Elk Grove v. Newdow. Another decision has been handed down today that demonstrates how spotty coverage by the media can so obfuscate the underlying principles of a case beyond any meaningful legal analysis. However, if Tennessee v. Lane was an example of a politically trivial case being blown out of proportion by scandal-mongering journalists, Elk Grove Unified School District v. Newdow. Reflections by a Reluctant Observer of the Juridical System. Friday, December 16, 2005. The other day I tried an odd little site. So if your musical tastes incline toward some fairly obvious criteria (like a "busy brass section," or "ska roots") you may well get some good ideas from the site; otherwise you can just use it to reassure yourself of your superiority to haphazardly-concocted internet amusements. The oldest children's bookshop in the world. STUDENT REVIEW: VINNIE'S WAR by David McRobbie. GUEST REVIEWER: KIERAN Yr 7. This was a sad and interesting book to read. I was intrigued by learning about World War II and its effect on children's lives. It gave me a better understanding of the impact of war. I really liked one of the main characters called Dobbs, who stood up for people being bullied and harassed. Very helpful teachers' notes. And some reviews from teachers around Australia here.
